Hello.

I have a problem trying to run my copy of GarageBand on my iMac. I've had the Mac since late 2011, and have run GB a few times, but at the moment it's not working and I don't know how to fix it.

I'm not sure how to explain the problem, so I recorded my actions with QuickTime and uploaded it to YouTube.

Any assistance it welcome. I hope to get a reply soon, as this has been happening for months now with little help from online. I'm sure it's an issue that doesn't require a techie charging a fortune.

Remove the Garageband plist files then reopen it.

Plist will be in /User/Library/Preferences and probably called com.apple.garageband.plist

Just delete it and then reopen Garageband. Failing that repair permissions from Disk Utility.

Hi there, do you have any other audio programs such as logic, sonor or pro tools? Sometimes when there are multiple programs that require the same files errors like this can occur. Do you remember if you changed any settings or installed any new programs since you had garageband working? One thing you could try is creating a new user account and trying it in there, since only the essential program files are shared between accounts. Let us know how you get on. Cheers, Ash.

I just tried it by creating a new user account. It just hung there in its initializing phase, similar to how it is in the video I posted.

I'll list all the apps I have in my Applications folder. Let me know if any of them may be conflicting at all:

I can't see anything there that could cause an issue. Do you have any saved garageband project files you could open up? If you go to Macintosh HD>Library>Application Support do you see a folder for PropellerHead Software or Melodyne? Cheers, Ash.

I don't see those folders, but there is a GarageBand one though...

Hmmm, very strange. Did your mac come with Lion or did you install it over snow leopard? And you've tried reinstalling and repairing permissions? This is getting difficult... Try going into the console app (in utilities) after garageband has crashed and see if you can decipher any information from there. Cheers, Ash.

I not long bought the Mac before the problems occurred, and I'm an Apple n00b so I don't know how to do their codes, etc. Been using Windows for about 20 years.

My system runs Lion and always has. GarageBand did work at first, but something must've happened (possibly from my own doing or something else - I wouldn't have a clue of which).

I'm uploading another screen capture of what you requested above (console app, etc). Will post in a reply once it's finished. Hopefully what I've captured will help solve the problem.

Alright, I'm gonna suggest booting into safe mode and opening garageband from in there. Safe mode is where only the essential system processes are loaded, I'm not sure whether it will work or not but give it a go. To do this, turn the mac off. Then turn it on and after you hear the chime press and hold the shift button until a grey progress bar appears on the screen (this may take a while). You should be taken to a log in box, where you can log on as usual. Once in safe mode, you should see the usual desktop and dock icons. Click on garageband and hope that it opens! Cheers, Ash.

Hmm, I'm not sure if I did it right or not. Everything looked like it usually does. Is there supposed to be any indication that it's in Safe Mode, like Windows does?

Either way, I tried opening GarageBand again and it did the usual.
