ubergeeknz: As long as he is alive. Such is the beauty of free speech. Oh, and Democracy.
minimoke: .. Hone, being a Special Person...
Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

I am not sure that free speech should include the right to use the N word, or White Mofo!

Why not? He can say whatever he likes.
Remember, it's the media who choose whether to publish it. Judging from their responses in that article, the other pollies ignore him already.
crackrdbycracku: We care not because he says this stuff but because he is in politics. He is in politics because people vote for him. People vote for him because he says outrageous things.
The leader of the Conservative Party has said some 'outrageous' things in the last few months too.

They are playing to a constituency; no more, no less.
Pita Sharples is in some ways more extreme because he isn't so outrageous. He actually tries to argue that Maori, and I'm one myself, should have more political power than other people. Effectively he is arguing against one person one vote. It's completely mad and as I say: 'If one person one vote is good enough for Nelson Mandela, it's good enough for me'. But some people actually listen, Auckland Super City Council came very close to having members selected by skin colour, not popular vote.
By comparison Hone is kind of a joke. He has about as much chance to influence our daily lives as those other N-word people.
Move on, nothing to see here.

I care because in some way he represents New Zealand, he is responsible for reflecting the people who elected him. I don't care JUST because he is a politician, the reality is that any use of that word, offends me.

Good point, it's an offensive word and I didn't mean to diminish that. I should have said: "We hear him because he is a politician and he gets media coverage". Without the media coverage he would just be a guy ranting at the pub, nobody would know to care. But you are right it is an offensive word.
I would say he represents NZ the way George Bush represented America. America has done some wonderful things, space program, and some really bad things, not going there. If I was American I'd be embarrassed that Bush had been the guy in charge but he's really just a blip. So is Hone. In any serious discussion of New Zealand history 'Hone' would be assumed to be Hone Heke, not this clown.
