Does anyone know where nz electronic shops get there electronics at wholesale prices? e.g: tvs, samsung, sony, panasonic.

From the the contracted suppliers or even direct from the NZ office like Samsung,

I can buy stuff at 'wholesale' prices from a number of places, but my suppliers cant match the prices that the likes of jb hifi and Harvey norman can get... bulk buying puts these guys in a different bracket. Even staff working for the sonys, panasonics, samsungs etc cant get things as cheap as some of the big chains...

Basically you can't. The manufacturers supply chains (Sony NZ, Panasonic NZ, etc) will not talk to you unless you are buying a lot (even small retailers cannot deal with them - and remember that The Warehouse still can't get Samsung to talk to them, and they're massive!)

The wholesalers (Renaissance, Ingram Micro) will only talk to you if you commit to buying volume - last I saw the minimum was about $10,000 per month. If it's for personal use, forget it. Most of those retail shops will probably be dealing with Ingram, or from suppliers in China for their no-name brand stuff. The exception are large chains such as JB Hi Fi, Harvey Norman, PB Technologies, etc. They mostly go direct.

His previous post was about buying mobile phone handsets wholesale - but by the answer here it seems the OP was looking at buying ONE handset at wholesale prices.

Cherry Tree looks to be possibly the only way to get goods, including electronics, at wholesale prices.

But there is a steep entry fee and an annual maintenance fee (I saw someone post the fee on the TM messageboards some time ago).

Might be ok if you're going to set up a whole house or something but not sure if it would pay off in the long run on an item-by-item basis.

The consumer electronics industry still revoles heavily around scan back style deals. It's not uncommon for big brand items such as TV's to be sold below cost by the retailer, with rebates then paid to the retailers after they are sold, with these sometimes based upon sales volumes.

Somebody such as Cherry Tree realistically doesn't stand a chance in the world of competing with the discounts that will be available to big retailers such as Harvey Norman, Noel Leeming etc.

This is basically my view. The discounts I can normally negotiate with retailers alongside some of the end-of-line discounts you can get tend to be very good and I can't imagine somewhere like Cherry Tree with their fees beating this.

I have got end-of-line TVs from major retailers for excellent prices, in the NY sales I was able to get a laptop for $500 under retail (though they sold out very fast and I was lucky to get one).
