Hey guys. Wasn't sure where else to put this thread. I'm wondering if anyone here knows about importing goods into NZ?

I'm looking at buying a new camera from the US because it's a good $1000 cheaper than getting it in NZ.

The camera will be shipped with UPS. The last time I used UPS, I got stung with a "brokerage fee". I've since heard that the fee can be avoided by paying customs tax/duty directly to NZ Customs.

Does anyone know how this process works?

Any info appreciated.

How many $? Once you trigger the collection of GST there is a NZ$46.89 import entry plus biosecurity fee added by Customs.

If the total value is over NZ$1,000, you also need a customs client code. You could apply for this when the goods arrive, but it takes a few days holding up release of the goods, so best to have one in place already.
Apply for an importer AND exporter code - as if you have to return damaged/faulty goods over $1k value, you'll need an exporter code.
NZ Customs contact centre are very helpful - have helped me to get goods cleared quickly - when shipper's track and trace has been showing "awaiting customs clearance" for days, one phone call to customs, quote importer code # which means they can look up any entry in your name, then you pay GST and IETF by CC over the phone, goods released immediately.

Thanks, that's really helpful. I think I have a client code actually - I remember applying for one a few years ago when I imported something.

I might give NZ Customs a call and see what they have to say. I want to avoid giving UPS money if possible, the shipping is already going to cost $130 USD -_-
