Hi,

I live in Belgium and i'd like to go to work in nz next year (with my wife, she has a master degree in Microbilogy).

But the problem is that a have just one year of experience in IT, and i'd like to know if it's possible to find a job in IT with juste one year of experience, and a bachelor degree...

I have the possibility to get a master degree, but it will take 3 years , 3 years of experience > master degree ?

Thank you (and sorry for my english, i'm coing to take some courses to improve it...).

Well IT is one of the best industries for employment rates, as long as you're good at it, there is no chance that you won't get hired.

Programming is your best shot as everyone wants programmers. Try not to go to Auckland if you can, the lifestyle there can be a bit overwhelming if you're not ready for it. Big city, big traffic problems, high cost of living.
Wellington would be a better suit with plenty of job opportunities in the IT sector.

What experience do you have? You may find bias against people who don't speak good english in the job market, though kiwis are generally very friendly and open minded generally. If you speak English well enough to communicate and are smart or experienced then you'll likely have few problems. The big problem could be work visas - unless you have specialist experience or qualifications I don't know how many places would sponsor you for a work visa.

A masters degree can almost count against you, make you seem overqualified. Three years real world experience would be much more useful in most commercial and government roles.

As above, what sort of work would you be looking or? i'd also say go with experience over masters. Going by your post above, your english is absolutely fine :)

I'll be looking for a programing job (C++ or Java,I have experience in both) . I'm a little bit afraid because we just can get one visa for one year, so i have to find a company who sponsor me , to get a work visa ^^
I'm really happy about your replies, in Belgium a lot of people said that it was impossible without a Master Degree (that's why i posted here :p ) .

Your English is already better than most of our.... lower class inhabitants here.

They replace "th"s with "f"s e.g. "I fink" instead of "I think".
They also replace "th" with "d" e.g. "Dis is ..." instead of "This is...".

Makes me want to hit them with a dictionary....... and force them to go back to primary school.

Masters degree may make it easier to get into the country, but not to get a job. Most job ads say you must be in the country and have the right to work in the country, so if you can work without sponsorship you should be ok. One year experience really makes you a beginner though.

There is a big demand for junior/intermediate programmers in the main cities/towns (Auckland and Wellington especially) and not a lot of supply as many graduates from NZ go overseas to the UK and Europe.

The last 3 programmers we hired were: South Korean, Irish and French Canadian, so it works in reverse, we go there they come here.

Anyway, it sounds like you are already on the right track improving your English, important for first impressions in interviewing.

You may also want to learn some C#/ASP.NET MVC or Ruby on Rails as these are probably more in demand than Java (though there are Java jobs) currently.
