Hi all

Is it too soon to think about Boxing Day bargains? Any rumors ?

Regards

If the last couple of years are anything to go by, generally the best deals will be had before Christmas.

Also keep in mind that many/most sales go for a full week, so no need to fight the crowds if something's not likely to sell out.

I guess it really depends what you're after.

Many retailers are moving to continual discounting these days following the seriously destructive Kathmandu model. If you wanted something from Farmers or Briscoes for example you'll see the same levels of discounting in a semi frequently basis over the other 51 weeks of the year.

Walk into a Harvey Norman store 52 weeks of the year and if you don't get an idiotic salesman you can haggle over the price of a big screen TV. I'm yet to be convinced your chances of getting a better deal of a big ticket item are any better during a boxing day sale. Yes you'll pick up some good bargains of one off items, but overall I think the NZ retail market is now munted. It's certainly nothing like the Aussie market or US market.

Unless the traffic jams caused by other would-be Godfrey's customers prevent him from getting there :)

I used to get the best retail deals after Christmas but I've noticed that this has changed in the Wellington region at least. For the last four years the best prices for consumer electronics have almost always been before Christmas. I have got many deals that have not been beaten for price-performance until another year has passed and Christmas approaches again: TVs, BluRay players, home theater, cameras, computers, etc.

I wonder if retailers are clearing stock before the Christmas rush.

I think there will be some great 'get people in the door' deals on certain items that the retailers have targeted, so if you are after a (for example) 32" TV, they will all be smashing the price on one of them and if you aren't particularly fussy about the brand/model you'll get an awesome deal. Same goes for a laptop or a tablet etc. There will be some insane below cost pricing, but only on a few models.

Boxing Day is still a big deal for most retailers, they cannot afford to be left out.

The same also applies to other retailers, such as Noel Leeming. We purchased a 50" Panasonic plasma from them this week, and they had no issues knocking $300 off the $1800 sticker price.

I've been picking up a few things on special in December that I know won't be beaten on Boxing Day
Still a few things I am hoping will go on sale between now and Xmas or on Boxing Day.

Generally I need more income to cover the wanted purchases though :-)

You do often still get some really good boxing day specials, but they are often very small quantities to get people through the door, so they probably sell them for a loss. The retailers do still want to get people into the stores after christmas. But it is usually in the electronics area where the specials are.
I am persoanlly looking for a good quality Canon DSLR, which I am hoping there will be some good deals in the boxing day specials.

not with jbhifi, they always have really great deals on boxing day.  last year i got a couple of 7.1 receivers for $280 (were $600 before xmas) went back up a week later.  full 1080p 32" branded tvs were around $380 (a year ago that was a great deal, now theyre cheaper its getting more common).  they usually have crazy console sales.

hoping to get another receiver this boxing day for my parents as a xmas present (told them ill wait to boxing day to buy it so they know what theyre getting :))

Two years ago I got a xbox 360 for $170. Although I must admit last year was poor, the only thing I got was a panasonic bluray player for about $90 which wasn't a great discount. I found last year the biggest discounts were on house branded stuff, which tends to be lower quality, and are things I wouldn't touch with a bargepole. I personally usually wait for the boxing day sales to buy that sort of thing.
