Not much use when data costs so much. One speedtest will eat up 500MB on 4G!

I really wonder how they're making these calculations lol.

I believe this is based on ookla speedtest results, so naturally when 4G launches in a country you get a whole load of people running speedtests and maxing out the line at 100-150Mbps, skewing the average up, so it's not surprising you get these results. I'm betting it will actually trend down as people stop runnning speedtests to 'check' their connection.

Nice!

I imagine as UFB and VDSL roll out to more people, we'll start to move up the board on fixed as well (42nd for Download speed presently)

This is hilarious

If the headline was "NZ has slow speeds, or NZ below average" it would have been a beatup.

NZ shows up (as it should) with excellent speeds and it's still a beatup.

I guess everyone might be passably happy if mobile plans were flat rate for $5/month and we held weekly public floggings of Spark, VF and 2D executives in major centres around the country?

Cheers N

ild question if these stats are only `cellular` tests, or any test done on mobile.. their site infers the later..

It would be different people doing the beatup

That Ookla data is complete and utter rubbish. It doesn't represent true real world results and is skewed as others have pointed out by LTE results.

Having said that NZ does have 2 of the best LTE networks in the world. Try getting over 100Mbps in the USA..

Rubbish it's just over 100MB I know as have done a lot of testing and checking before 4G / LTE was launched and watched the data consumed live on the DR

Confirmed. I also engaged Ookla to determine the download size and it turns out that because the mobile speedtest app can stop downloads whenever it wants, and is adaptive to the speed of the connection, the amount of traffic used for a mobile app speedtest is non deterministic.

On really good LTE connections, Telecom also observed just over 100MB per complete test. Ookla confirmed this matched their expectations.

It still gives general trends though. Even if the actual numbers are skewed; the end result of indicating that we are somewhere up the top in terms of our average mobile data speeds is likely to be correct.

This is off topic but...

Please change your badge from Telecom NZ to Spark  I found it confusing.

I've seen a lot of international LTE speed tests on the likes of XDA-Developers, and the 147Mbps down I pulled outside my apartment pantses every one of them. It's glorious.

What you might not realise is that in some markets the carriers restrict speed on 4G based on what kind of subscription you have. For a prepay and lower cost subscription in Norway the speed is limited to 10 Mbit/s. Compared to that the 4G service here in New Zealand is pretty fantastic.
