The New Zealand Defence Force is conducting routine training of Air Force and Army personnel from 24-28 May 2015.
The training will occur in and around the Kaipara Air Weapons Range and in the Auckland Central Business District during which time the public may see NH90 and A109 helicopters flying over the city in formation.
All flying will be concluded by 10pm each evening.

There doesn't need to be a major event for police and military to train. Training is what they do, after all.
When TV3 did their doco about the SAS a few years back they mentioned doing regular training ops via helicopter over the CBD at night.
