Hi all,

I came here to find people that would help me by giving me some information. We are really considering coming to New Zealand permanently (we are from Belgium, EU). My boyfriend has a bachelor in computer science and I'm gonna have a master degree in biochemistry and molecular biology. We are not concerned about finding a job in the IT sector, but I am concerned about my own carreer in the scientifical domain. Would it be difficult to find a job or would it be quite okay? I'm on the skill list occupations and I checked the job opportunities ; I concluded we would have to live near Auckland. What are you guys thinking about that situation ?

thanks for everything ^^

Crown Research Institutes might be worthwhile looking at.

You could also make some general enquires targeted to the Universities in NZ that provide qualifications in that area (e.g. Otago University, Massey University, University of Auckland etc.)

Would you consider going for a PhD?

Some of our universities have local course costs for internationals when going for PhDs

Something like

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

International students are eligible for domestic tuition fees. International PhD students must be a resident in New Zealand (apart from temporary absences for the purposes of approved doctoral research) to be classified as a domestic student and pay domestic tuition fees. International PhD students who do not meet the criteria for domestic tuition fees will be charged NZ$31,000 per annum (or part thereof if applicable).

If you want a research job then you will find it really difficult.  Make sure you have a job offer before committing to come to NZ.

+1

A lot of NZ researchers are losing their jobs right now. Their posts are being "disestablished"  undecided

There is a lot happening but it may depend on your area of expertise for your masters.

I'm sorry to answer this late, I sent a lot of emails and I'm still waiting for some replies. One of them told me that unfortunately, they had no available vacanties for an intern, but they redirected me to the websites of http://www.internnzoz.com which seems really cool ! Although of course, it will cost some extra money, but I have the waranty of finding an internship and an accommodation there. I don't know exactly how much this service cost but I'm gonna email them as well. :)

PhD student here. Remember that (I'm assuming) after doing a PhD you still need a job. There is not as many research opportunities in NZ as you would find in Europe. If you want an academic job, that's also quite tough to get in the larger universities.
