Hi.

This thread is about Racism. It's not meant to be inflammatory, I'd encourage anyone thinking of replying to think their responses out carefully, and to keep emotion out of it, so this doesn't turn into a topic full of hate and horror.

So...

There are a group of people who included Jada Pinkett Smith and now Will Smith (Supporting his wife's position) and a director, who have decided not to attend the Oscars, because, for the second year running, no black actors have received a nomination.

I am wondering if this is ALSO a type of racism, because should nominations not be based on the skill and performance of the individual and NOT be a race matter? Just because there were no black actors nominated, does not automatically make the people who

decide who gets nominated and who wins, racist to my thinking... It's possible they are, but it's not something that should be automatically assumed without significant additional evidence.

To my mind, it fits in the same vein as the SA Black player mandatory ratio of black players in the national rugby team. Teams should be picked on MERIT, skill, suitability, ability to work well with others, etc.

Anyways, thoughts?

I would hope that it is based purely on skill. It is however an industry award ceremony it probably has more to do with vested interest as opposed to skill. There would need to be more evidence before racism could be shown to play a role

in selection.

Hmmmm. Here we go.

(Where's Peter Reader when you need him... Sorry but IMO there really is no way this thread will go anywhere good, and I'm betting we will have all heard both sides of the argument many, many, many times before.)

The fact that I don't care about this does not actually mean that expressing that point of view becomes unnecessary!

I'm so bored of forced 'equality' items, be they to do with colour, income or gender, that I just find the whole concept unbearably dull.

With the rise of the internet, everybody with a connection can have an opinion. For that reason the Academy and their awards are largely irrelevant. They are merely a marketing exercise for the studios and a chance for a few Hollywood insiders to make a bit of cash.
The only thing that really matters is whether the masses can be persuaded to part with their cash to view the movie. For me, I am more likely to base my viewing habits on reviews from real people (and marketing hype if I'm honest) than how many gold statuettes a film wins.
Perhaps while the academy are looking at the balance of awards, they should also consider whether there is any need to have gender based awards as well. Surely your ability to act isn't based on whether you have XX or XY chromosomes?

Edit: spell correct correction.

Also how can you start a thread about racism and not expect hate and horror? Is like lightng a match to see how much petrol is in the tank. Bill wouldn't do it ;-)

It depends which black actors were snubbed and what their performances were I suppose. If there have been some terrific performances by black actors that weren't nominated, while some mediocre performances from white actors were nominated, then perhaps.

However if racism was to be blamed anywhere, it is probably more to do with white actors getting the better roles. But this has nothing to do with the Academy Awards.

As far as the Smith's, I'd say this is an attempt to stay relevant more than anything else. Will Smith is not the A-lister he once was.

That there is a belief of "forced equality" means there is actually a problem. Equality be it colour, gender, disability or ethnicity  just is, that's it.

Yep. It is a long stretch from here for you to claim the Smiths are seeking some kind of affirmative action.

What conclusion have you drawn? What outcome do you think they actually want?

Not necessarily affirmative action but an examination of the process.

Is it racism or were all the top performances for the last 2 years by white actors?

The Oscars have always been criticised for snubbing the critics choices, I don't know that racism has anything to do with it.

Maybe they are also geekists as Star Wars didn't get any acting nominations either.

I notice there is a distinct lack of Russian 1 legged transexual nominations too!
