I've dabbled with a dummy forex account, but am interested in investing in shares.
Can anyone recommend a trading platform for shares traded in NZ/AU? Any advice from traders much appreciated.

ASB Securities and ANZ (Bond and Share) are available from the banks as standard products.
ASB iirc has free Foreign Currency accounts for ASB Sec customers (you ask ASB Sec to set it up) - may've changed but was true when I helped parents back in November, and they handle all the CHESS(AU)/FIN(NZ) setup stuff for you.
ANZ's platform I'm not as sure on, but again their Foreign Currency accounts were very cheap (compared to other banks) when I looked.
If you are looking at investing a bit of money in shares, you may be better off looking at a private broker and phoning around, the one thing I will say is that the fees that ANZ and ASB charge on trades seem high :)
For portfolio tracking, http://www.sharesight.co.nz/ is quite nice, (I don't hold my shares in the 'trust' accounts they run, but rather hold them direct, so the portfolio tracking systems that ASB/ANZ have wouldn't work well).

Thanks - I haven't come across the sharesight service. Will check it out.
ANZ Share and Bond Trading (ANZSBT) is pretty easy to use and their service is good (over the phone) if you need assistance. I believe you need to have an ANZ account for transactions although. As well as NZ/AU, you can trade shares in the US and UK (Fees are a lot higher for these markets though).
From what I know the sharebroker firms charge higher fees than the discount brokers of ASB / ANZ.
