After being away for a long time from trademe I came back to find a disaster.

I noticed something very strange either kiwis have changed or trade me is a place for dishonest people.

I see everyone's concern with feedback lash back , this was a major blow to my account after I came back.

A user bought something the auction clearly says no post for auctions under $5.00

not only I have to remind her to pick up the item but she did not have the courtesy to contact me to tell me she can not pick up before I contact her, anyway she told me her car is not working so she can not pick up, then I reply back and told her I need to know if she is getting the item or not other wise I will relist the item.

She said, her car is still in the repair shop, can i drop it off to town, I find this request stupid she bought the item for $1 and want me to deliver?

I message her and said "No" there is no chance of delivery.

I left an honest feeback based on what happened she retaliate with a red face. I took the matter to trademe the buyer was not happy with the red face obviously because she is a trader and told me she is informing trademe I ignored all her emails few days later her feedback on my page were removed but not my feedback on her page lucky me.

one day later another bad user who bought something left for me a bad feedback after I left her a bad feedback. this  person arranged a day for pick up for the item the next day I found the item still in the letter box :(. So I felt it is only right to leave her a red face it is what she deserved. she retaliate with a red face and a comment " sorry my computer was not working i got it to work after a week, which was a total lie, how could that possible when I we were arranging a pick up day within that time period. [don't everyone have a phone these days]

I took the matter to trademe again it's been a week no action from trademe. I send trademe two message in regard to the matter I am waiting for it to resolve they said a reply will be within 24 hours while that did not happen.

later they say there are only few working on this area so it will take time.

I really started to feel I should just not leave a feedback and leave only feedback after a user leaves a feedback, but on a second thought, nah no way I am going to leave bad honest feedback and just use "report unfair feedback" feature.

My advise is to learn from your experience, look at the area people are slackin and make conditions based on that.I don't like making a long conditions like a corporate trade agreement but I am forced to do so to get these bad users feedback removed and my red face on their pages stay.

I will not give in to such people.

put due date where by that time if the trade is not completed you will relist the item, also put if the item is not picked up as arranged it will be relisted, put you only get one chance to making a pick up date if you screw it, item goes back online for sale.

Every kind of thing you don't want to deal with must be put on that auction condition write on on notepad then save and just copy from notepad and paste on every auction you list.

And lastly use "report unfair feedback"  it is there for a reason. never give in to such users.

If your listing was pick up only and had no paid postage option fair enough they are unreasonable.

If you had paid postage listed and had some obscure message in the description that you wouldn't post for <$5 then I think you got what you deserved(being mucked about), set a price you are happy to sell for and meet the obligations as a seller.

Option 1:

One option is to not place feedback, but request to a success fee refund instead. Once your success fee refund has been granted, you will get a feedback from TradeMe on your feedback page saying you were the trade was not completed. You then have the option to add a comment on your own feedback page justifying why the trade wasn't completed. Just write 'buyer failed to make contact' or something like that. That means your feedback record isn't tarnished and you avoid the retaliatory feedback. They will get the same feedback from TradeMe on their page, but they won't be smart enough to write a comment. For me, a trader with numerous incomplete trades is as much a red flag as a trader with a few reds.

Option 2:

If someone has stuffed you around they probably won't leave feedback, unless you do... If you want to be clever, you can place your feedback right before the option to place feedback is removed. I believe you have a 45 day window. I never done it myself, but it's always been a tactic in the back of my mind.

Edit: Obviously these are suggestions for future trades.

I would not bother posting bad feedback for an issue about buyer of a $1 item. Neutral at best.

I think giving someone bad feedback for not picking up an item out of your letterbox, after already paying for it, is very much over the top.  I would feel like giving you tit for tat bad feedback for that.  If you are concerned about keeping your own feedback high, don't tempt people to retaliate over nothing.

I agree, I would be pretty annoyed to get bad feedback because I hadn't picked something up from a letter box. Things happen than can change people's plans. If it got stolen in the meantime, then that would be my fault for not picking it up. But as a seller I would just email the buyer to say it is still in the box for pickup at any time. I think the op is a bit trigger happy with the negative feedback button. I have been trading since Trademe started and have no bad feedback and have only given bad feedback once, when the buyer decided to not follow through and then ignored emails and ended up being a true time waster. However I never bother selling at a dollar reserve as I suspect you do end up getting a different type of buyer.

Scheduling bad feedback placing was one of my hates on there. And the cut off isnt exactly 45 days either, have had a few hours to spare on occasion and missed it.

You used to be able to see peoples last activity on the site. If they were infrequent users then day 44 and a half worked pretty reliably to have them unable to place one back.

The other was to leave a positive with just nonsense as text and edit it after 45 days to negative since you get one edit, and they would usually not place anything and then be too late.

This thread once again reminds me why I try to avoid using TradeMe whenever I can (buying stuff has usually been OK for me, selling is just a PITA).

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

I tend to just say pickup only on my auctions these days, cant be arsed running around trying to get things packed and sent in a reasonable time frame.

This was one I got for an auction I ran where the all the money went to a charity - I made nothing off it at all.

it's ok, once you have one bad feedback, it's not a clean record anyway, you will sleep easier. the first bad feedback hurts, then you just accept it, esp if you also have 999 positive ones.

It requires some work to keep 100% positive feedback:

  • Treat people the best you can or as you would want to be treated.
  • Be truthful. You can give positive or neutral feedback and put a negative comment about a specific aspect of the trade.
  • Be kind. Especially to new traders, traders who have no feedback or foreigners (those who clearly aren't familiar with NZ customs and aren't good English speakers).  Don't take frustrations out on others. For example, relisting auctions because sales fall through can be really annoying and inconvenient but they are a fact of life.
  • Be judicious. Don't post bad feedback without pursuing other options first. Bad feedback posted too quickly or without good reason almost always earns retaliatory bad feedback. Whereas bad feedback for good reasons generally receives grudging agreement. I've seen people give bad feedback a day or two after they transferred the funds because the trader didn't get back to them immediately - that is way to quick.
  • Be factual, e.g. include dates so people can see large delays e.g. auction closed 1/2/17, paid 5/2/17, item received 15/3/17,
  • Be understanding. Don't post bad feedback unless you are clear on the reasons why. Lack of response to emails is not sufficient: hacked accounts and hospitalisations have been 1 in 500 for me.
  • Be patient. Wait for a month for post items to arrive. I query whether it has been sent and send the seller an update every week or so. I've had items I've sent take three weeks to arrive. I've waited for items to take 6 weeks to arrive - just before feedback has to be placed. In all these cases, the item was posted promptly so the delay was all in New Zealand post.
  • Be fair and keep your feedback focused on that one trade. Don't post bad feedback because you had a problem with an earlier trade from the same person. Don't post bad feedback just because others have. There's often no that good comes from "hopping on a bandwagon". If they have a record of problems then just don't deal with them: don't bid on their auctions or let them bid on yours.
  • Be proactive. Read bidders feedback. You can learn a lot. Remove bids from bad traders on your auctions and then blacklist them. I also blacklist bad sellers so I know who to avoid: those who are too grumpy, too mean, and too unreliable; volume traders with more than 1% of bad feedback; liars; etc.
  • Be decisive. Request a refund if there is a lack of response or an obvious inability to complete the trade. The process brings clarity to many failed or potentially failing sales. If they want out of the trade then I let them out in almost every circumstance.
  • Be mindful of Trade Me rules. Remember that Trade Me staff might have to read your emails and feedback so you might get more help by being reasonable, considerate and kind rather than bossy, rude, demanding or vindictive.
  • and so on

I don't have any bad feedback although I did receive one that was removed because I explained very clearly what happened and they just looked foolish.

I would certainly post items under $5, they are likely to be the small easy to send things.

Appliances on the other hand.................

So, then one day later, the item had not been collected - from a letterbox. Obviously so they did not cramp your style by wanting to knock on the door and collect it I guess.

And you throw a tantrum over that? Couldn't just have left it there for another day or so?

I have done about 300 trades, and I did at one stage have one negative feedback. It was because I had purchased something which I discovered was faulty and could see damage on it, and the seller disputed it when it arrived, and then said it wasn't damaged or faulty when they sent it which was rubbish, because on closer inspection of the photos on the listing, I could see the damage. I thus left negative feedback, and they then left retaliatory feedback. This was at a time when trademe didn't do anything about retaliatory feedback, and even though I complained to trademe about this, they said that they don't get involved and wouldn't remove it. But I eventually got it removed as they eventually cancelled the persons account. But it can affect peoples reputation, especially if you have only got a few trades under your belt. So is it worth leaving negative feedback? Probably not worth the strife it may bring, but certainly I would never do it for someone not picking up something they had already paid for. I have had that problem a few times, and it is a minor issue.

I mean, they paid, it is theirs...  If they don't pick it up then ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Ive had some classic negative feedbacks, inc one guy who said he wasnt home for the courier for a week due to an aunty dying and that he had a security camera running which never showed a courier arriving over the whole week (he must have been extremely bored to watch all that footage) .....  then 3 months later he tried pulling the same story on someone else. TradeMe shut his account down.
