Hey guys.

I've been looking at www.campamerica.co.nz over the last few days, and I'm interested in applying for the 2009 season and going over to the USA and working at a childrens summer camp. I'm going to try and get a job there as an IT teacher, which shouldn't be too hard as I've also been reading their forums and it looks like they sponser thousands of camps in the USA and send young people there to work in many different jobs at camp.

has anyone else gone to the USA and worked in a summer camp there?

I did Camp America some years ago, was a really good experience and highly recommended - cheap way to begin an OE as your first three months, food, accommodation are given - you then get another three months on your visa to travel around the USA.

My biggest recommendation is book your own flights. The flights I booked through Travel Cafe were a huge rip off, and Camp America will encourage you to use them (I'm pretty sure they get a referral). Shop around, get a better deal and save yourself some $$.

Also, the free night they offer you in the hotel in San Fran (if you stopover there) isn't that good, so don't make an effort to use it (I did, and was disappointed).

How long ago did you do Camp America? (if you don't mind me asking)

I went to their Wellington information night last week and was basically sold. I'm waiting to have my interview this week!!! The staff there and returned counselors were really helpful and answered all my concerns/questions

I've already been in contact with Travelcafe, as I was interested in knowing what the fares are so far, but the fares havn't come out yet. I was told their fares for summer 2008, and I was impressed. My mum is a travel agent and she said that she couldn't beat the fares, even with her staff deals

I was reading the Camp America web-site more last night and it said they have a hotel in New York. I suppose if its a free night, then thats excellent.

I think it was 5 or so years ago now. Interesting to hear about the fares with TravelCafe, I was very annoyed on my return to learn that my airfares were a lot more than through a travel agent.

With the free night in New York, when we stayed in San Fran it was four adults to one double room - two people on the bed, and two people on stretchers next to the main bed. It's very crampted, and the worse thing about the San Fran hotel was it was in the middle of nowhere, so you couldn't walk to any malls etc.

I had my interview last week, which went really well. I've now completed my application and my interviewer has sent it off. I'm now waiting to hear back for when I need to pay my second deposit so my application can be sent around the Camps in the USA.

My interviewer in Wellington was really good. He answered several questions that I had built up since the Information night.

I'm so excited, I can't wait. Camp America ROCKS

Hi Nate.

I was talking to a returned Camp America counsellor a few days ago and he stayed at the hotel in NY before heading to camp. He said that it wasn't like a hostel - it was a hotel run by Camp America. He said he knows that CCUSA put their counsellors in a hostel somewhere in California, as one of his mates went to Camp with CCUSA. His mate didn't enjoy the CCUSA hostel one bit and was glad to get to camp. I'm going to use the hotel in NY thats run by Camp America as my base for exploring the NY area after camp.

Further update to my progress. I've now been placed at a camp in Michigan and will fly to camp early June. I'm so excited, I really can't wait. Camp America ROCKS!

Hi, I did CCUSA Camp Counselros for 3 summers. They were fantastic. They were and still are the cheapest company in NZ for summer camp. I have friends who just got back last month and they stayed in the Radission hoitel in LA with CCUSA when they first arrived. What they liked was that CCUSA were there at the ariport to meet them. I do recommend CCUSA as they have helped me.

Ive applied for 09 done everything and just paid my 2nd amount! Im real excited to. I was at that same interview u were at! Might pay catching up through msn or something like that. I wanna try and meet and get to know some otehr people who are going! <removed> is my msn address.
