Hi all, I have a question regarding the wage subsidy.

I am currently working with an organization and I am serving notice period over there which ends on 13th April 2020. I resigned because I got a job at another organization and my start date was 14th April. Now due to the current situation, I won't be able to join the new organization on that date and they have asked me to push the joining date which is fair. I contacted my current organization if they have applied for my wage subsidy, which they have and ask them to keep me and pay me through the lockdown period as they have got 12 weeks of wages for me.

To which the replied that they will only pay me till 13th April and will return the remaining amount to the government.  I contacted my new employer as well and they told me that one can only apply wage subsidy once and since my employer has already applied for me, they can't. They also told me that they have already submitted a wage subsidy for their employees. Now I am struck. I don't know where to go for my income.

It's not my fault that my transition of jobs happened during such time. I am so stressed out that how I am going to survive without an income and nobody knows when this lockdown will be over. Also, I am not a resident in this country so can't get any benefit from the government.

Can you please advise who is liable for my wage subsidy and what shall I do in this situation? I have been trying hard to get a hold of Work & Income since 2 days but with no luck.

Many thanks in advance.

sounds like a case for Work & Income as you will effectively be unemployed.

Hey Work & Income is very busy at the moment. Can't get through them. Also, I am not a NZ resident so my chances of getting any benefit is bleak.

According to the WINZ FAQ,

https://workandincome.govt.nz/products/a-z-benefits/employer-questions-and-answers.html

An employer can also more than one application - but can only apply once per employee

So the job you are going to should be able to put in an application to receive a payment for you

I already applied for the COVID-19 Wage Subsidy, but only for some of my employees. Can I make another application for my remaining employees?
Yes. You can make an additional application for any of your employees whom you haven’t already applied for

I would contact your new employee to advise them of this

This also might be useful.

As an employer, what happens if I make my employee redundant during this time?

You need to try your best to retain your employees you are currently receiving the COVID-19 Wage Subsidy for. If you applied for the COVID-19 Wage Subsidy for any employees after 5pm on 27 March 2020, you must retain those employees or you will be in breach of your obligations.

I realise it's for redundancy, but it might help your old employer keep you on the books for a while and keep paying you the subsidy. Came from a Deloitte newsletter update. Message me if you want it forwarded on.

Hey, thanks, I read that as well but it's pointing towards redundancy I guess. I have requested my current employer again to retain me. Let's see how things go for me. But they are also not obligated to pay me beyond my termination.

I got offered a new job back in IT on Friday 20/03 and accepted the offer over the phone (was very pleased) and had to give 2 weeks notice to my current employer so called them  early Monday afternoon and handed in my notice over the phone (I generally only worked 3 days a week sometimes 4 - 5 days) casual full time for the last 2.5 years

Now I am stuck in between 2 jobs with this lock down so not sure what I am meant to do, Sure is odd situation to be in
