Hi, I just recently joined geekzone and was wandering if you guys could help me out. As the title state I'm wanting to become a network engineer or something along the lines of it. I have just recently graduated from Auckland Uni with a BSc in Information systems. Just recently I landed a phone support job with an ISP and will be handling Tech Support and Billing enquiries.

I'm trying to figure out if I am on the right path and if you guys think i need any certifications. I have done CCNA1-4 through uni but have yet to sit the final exam.

If its something you enjoy and have passion for then you're probably on the right path. Starting at the bottom (helpdesk) and working your way up is the only real way to do things, make contacts, play and learn as much as you can and do some papers if you're any good at studying :)

If you could get yourself a small lab to work with comprising of routers, switches & voip from the vendors cisco & juniper that would be a good start for the SME & ISP world. Depending on which provider you end up working (if you go telco) then it'll eventuate to Alcatel-Lucent equipment or Extreme networks for switching all the while still utilizing cisco & juniper.

Juniper used to do free courses, JNCIA & JNCIS from time to time, not sure if they still do but have a look at their website and maybe sign up.

It's not something you will get into quickly, it'll take time, but provided your eager to learn and play with new equipment and you watch and learn from others you should be ok.
