Hi, I'm wondering about whether it's viable to put broadband in a holiday home. Currently, I'm using a 3G T-stick, but it has its limitations.

Given that I wouldn't be staying there the whole year, are there any options that would allow me to pay for only the months that I stayed there? If not, what's the cheapest I could do?

In any case, if I wanted to offer internet to guests, are there any simple ways to do so while ensuring that they don't go overboard on data usage? (A monthly data cap wouldn't be much of a constraint on guests staying early in the month).

Gargoyle router to limit internet use in a variety of ways, including daily/weekly cap, with throttle usage once capped. Uplink to ethernet so just run any modem you want, be it DSL or something with 3G or whatever.

Also, can you advise the area it's in, how much data you would expect to use per month and year, and typical things you would want to do with the connection?

I don't have nor particularly want a phone line here. The location is Queenstown. Ballpark data figure is 10GB per month, no more than 60GB per year.

if you have a line connected to the house then all you need is naked and a ISP that you can join without a contract and then just join up for the month or so you are there then cancel it, if you dont have a line maybe think of installing one, it would be worth it if you are thinking of being there a long time.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Bear in mind the raw cost to an ISP for doing this (connect for a month or two then disconnect) (actual costs from Chorus, actual wages for call centre and provisioning and billing staff, let alone overheads) is probably much much more than the charges you will pay. You might achieve this once, but don't be surprised if any ISP is not keen to do it once, or again in the future.

In palmy our biggest local wisp runs two networks over their gear. One postpaid and one prepaid. You pay them to install the radio and then you just log on via web interface and top your account up while at the property. They started it at the beaches for holiday homes. Maybe there is something similar down your way.

They run a radio based broadband network in queenstown and could probably install a radio reciever on your roof which is only activated during the months you stay at the holiday home.
Its not a service they advertise but one they could easily provide if they wanted to.

Reason I asked if you already have an active phone line, is that the incremental cost of adding broadband would be quite low.

For lower usage, a permanent mobile data setup would have been your best bet.

Unless you can get some kind of ad-hoc deal with a local WISP as other posters have suggested, the only real option would be to have a DSL connection running all the time.

I didn't go through with it the last time. However, now I want to put a phone line and Wifi in this place.

I'm thinking that a roll-over plan for the internet would be ideal, because there would be many times that the internet would be scarcely used. Are there any particularly cheap ones about?

Is there any way to cap guest bandwidth without a special router? (If not, what would be a good router for it?) Would there be any way to remove this cap when it's me there (without making it possible or too easy for the guest to do the same?)

How concerned should I be about security? There's a room next door that might have guests while I'm there, is there anything they could plausibly do with access to the Wifi password if we're both on the internet?

Do you already have a landline (copper) to the bach? If not, you'll probably be forking out for a run of copper from the closets cabinet/exchange to the bach.. (could be ouch!)

Depending on where you are in queenstown it is a 2degrees mobile broadband zone which combined with mifi device might do the trick http://www.2degreesmobile.co.nz/mobilebroadband $99 for 12gigs that last six months could fit the bill

Just to make you aware "T-Stick" is a marketing phrase termed by Telecom (very successfully it seems!). You are probably best to get a router that supports a USB modem. Just for your information the USB modems are like $20, the router may be slightly more. I have a Cisco SRP521w which could work.
