I am about to move to a rental in Otumoetai, Tauranga, and need to set up a broadband connection. I'm fairly ignorant on the technicalities.
Are there any opinions on the best ISP to use? I have a preference for EOL (a local company), at the moment from what I've read and what I think I need, but there isn't much on them.
Others on my shortlist are Snap / Vodafone / Telecom / Orcon / Flip / Wireless Nation & Netsmart.
I previously had TelstraClear cable in Wellington, so a little spoilt on speed, I don't think I'll go with them now because their reviews appear to be poor in general, and they've been swallowed by Vodafone anyway

The issues which seem to be important to consider are:
Wiring & devices from 'street' to pt of interaction (ie laptop, in my case) ;
Current provision of ADSL+ or better, as well as plans for next year+ ;
Outage frequency ;
Customer Service ;
Upload/Download speed ;
Consistency of performance over an average 24hr period (esp at peak times) ;
Actual average speed vs reported max speed ;
Distance from house to cabinet/exchange ; and
Latency (wrt Gaming / VOIP)

Lots to consider I know! So if I'm asking to much I apologise...

I am in TGA and Snap with VDSL is my first choice but at least ADSL because there speed at peak times and get their modem it's awesome.

I am in Tauranga. I choose EOL because they can offer UFB (ping to Perth less than 20ms)

Note that EOL will give you a RFC1918 IP (a private IP, not a public v4 one) by default on UFB (as per: http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=135&topicid=110189 ) and a single public v4 IP costs $20+GST/month.

(And no ipv6 yet apparently! Slack)

VDSL close according to the Chorus map, but only ADSL2 at the moment. I'm trying to find a provider who may be upgrading soon, especially to UHF. That's why EOL looked promising.

Was your address in the Green VDSL Zone? EOL is fine buy you will get stung pretty bad for data.

To be honest khywana, I'm too much of an ignoramus to really understand your answer. I assume this is not good lol, and not in favour of EOL's service?

If fibre becomes available you should be able to get service from any ISP offering UFB plans.
Edit: What khywana said means that you'll have issues using services such as Xbox Live and P2P on EOL, because unless you pay extra for an externally routable IP address, outside parties will not be able to connect to you.

Thats unlucky most of that area has been upgraded. Was there green even close or did you hit "show VDSL cabinets" you should get ok ADSL2 if its close to a green zone atleast.

Did you check when fibre is available you don't want to be in a long term contract if fibre is around the corner.

Thx. That's a really useful link. Says July 2013 is on plan for my address. Does that mean all ISP's active in the area will be able to provide UFB then at my address? The other question how realistic is this proposed date. What is record like wrt timely service delivery?

Well nothings guaranteed that date is correct but its getting closer and I know they have done some of Bethelem so its probably in the ball park. Yes anyone who has a UFB plan and has and has an agreement with Ultrafast who installs it will be able to offer you service. Telecom must have plans by then so weigh up your options dont get locked into a contract that is a pain to get out of if UFB turn up at your address.
