First up I really appreciate all the advice and the Geekzone email newsletter today about connection issues and splitters. Thanks Geekzone! Seems a no-brainer to punt the $30-odd for one on Trademe and give it a go. Only thing is, exactly where shall I put it?

My info;
Chorus look up says my address has ADSL2+ & VDSL2 capability.
Orcon Genius says my link type = ADSL2+

Actual Data Rate=..1017kbps......... 14114 kbps
Noise margin = .......13db................. 12db
Attenuation=............13db..................23db

My Orcon Genius is connected on a naked-style plan, no phone line, VOIP.
Two sockets in the house, daisy chained. No phone equipment, no alarm, no Sky box.

Socket 1 is in a laundry cupboard with power points, the normal router spot.
Socket 2 (extension daisy chained off) is in the living room, where TV/Sky might normally go.

Assume easiest to place the splitter just before socket 1, making that router only?
We get slightly better wifi connection house-wide by having the router in the living room though.

Last question. I did notice that the cable between the incoming junction box and socket 1 has been cut and rejoined. Worth 10m of new cable to replace it and lose those joints? If so ok to use some spare Cat5 I have lying around?

You could put it inside your eternal termination point. That's the white box outside your house where the phone line comes in from the road.

Then run a dedicated cat5e cable to your modem/router.

If you put it in your cupboard, with the ADSL pair connected tot he jackpoint there, and the other pair connected to the one inyour lounge, it will be fine - if the cable from the ETP to the cupboard is good.

Best way to eliminate cable issues within your house (ie. what you can control) is to put the splitter at the ETP if you can and run two new cables from there - one for Voice, the other Data - you could put a new voice point next to your data one in the cupboard and keep the daisy chain to the lounge off that one. You could run the voice pair and the data pair down a single CAT5E/Cat6 cable (use Blue and Blue/White for Voice and another pair for data).

The white box is only about 10cm square, will it fit?

And as far as using the cat5 - I just use a pair within it like normal phone wire? I have wired up a few phone sockets but never used cat5.

As long as it's not a complete rat's nest of wires, it will fit inside the ETP. The master filters are sized to allow this.

I have mine in a cupboard because our house doesn't have an ETP:

They are designed to fit in the ETP - some even have a moulded ledge for the filter to sit in.

You can use the blue pair for the voice line and green for the DSL.

Great, thanks guys. You have answered all my questions.

Just for completeness I will post the improved stats here when installed, although really I don't need extra speed - just connection reliability.

In terms of buying the filter, there is a guy on TradeMe selling the filter and a handful of gel crimps to do the job.

You can also get the filters from PBTech and the crimps from places like Jaycar, J A Russell, CablesDirect etc.

The splitter its self is actually smaller than people expect and should fit inside a standard ETP box.

Normal Cat5 or Cat6 should be fine, I tend to go for the more flexible Cat5e for this purpose.

Do you need a phone jack in the lounge, if I read it right the line goes from the ETP to the closet where the modem is and then the lounge, just connect direct from the lounge to the modem in the closet and disconnect the ongoing line.

Thanks for the suggestion Cyril but I am not quite with you?
I have now the cat5 cable running direct to the etp, from the router point. Also another regular phone cable running from the lounge point to etp. You are right in that I don't need the lounge point working at the moment (using VOIP service thru router). Are you suggesting I disconnect that at the splitter and see if it improves performance?
