All - prob a silly question... but can I get high speed satellite broadband in nz - outside of the 256k stuff offered by Orcon / Iconz? Happy to pay for a dish. What about this new PanAm Satellite - PAS-8?

Sattellite Internet will cost you min $2500 including equip + installation and then a furthur min $100+/month bill from the ISP.....see if www.woosh.co.nz is available on your farm.....

we are in hunua - so no woosh. 5 pax in the street - happy to chip in for dish then to add wireless router. But does this then get full speed - or is it still just the 256k.

My work (www.farmside.co.nz) can do 1024/512 $99 install/26 month contract. Uses IPSTAR.

IPStar is the best satellite service to use as rather than using DVB technology as other satellite internet services use (like the old ihug) which require a phone line return, it uses an high performance two way technology. There are several ISP's that are setup to provide you with IPSTAR service, farmside is one of them, however they only advertise their 256/128 speed services although they will do others. One of the ISPs www.wirelessnation.co.nz provide pricing of higher speed IPSTAR services $56/month for 1Gig 2M/1M which is not too bad, $69/month for 3Gig. With all IPSTAR services you have to pay $400-$500 for the install, and you have to take out a 24-36month plan so they can cover the cost of the gear. farmside are disconting the install to $99 at the moment.

Hey PottsyNZ, farmside has a 36 month contract ( i know, your finger slipped ) 3 different speed plans, and a helpdesk with real people, and ones that have actually installed satellite, not just read about it.

Hi PottsyNZ,

During May last year I was dealing with Raewyn at Farmside regarding a Wireless Broadband plan. The prices were exactly the same as the Satellite plans at that time, however, I see that all pricing for Rural Broadband has now been removed from Farmside's web site.

Anyway, the situation boiled down to:

Telecom (Xtra Wireless): $59.95 incl. GST for the equivalent of Farmside's "Base Plan".

Farmside's price for the same service was $89 + GST = $100.12 i.e. 67% more than Xtra's price!!!

I believe you will need to rethink your approach if you are to be successful in enticing existing subscribers to switch to Farmside. Maybe for new customers your offer is more competitive, but even there, I would rather pay Xtra $700 as a one-off installation cost, rather than pay Farmside $1446.12 in extra charges over the 3-year term.

Has there been any change in this policy?

Almost a year later and I am still waiting for ICONZ to upgrade my Kordia Wireless plan so maybe it's worth seeing what Farmside could offer again?

There are an awful lot of places in NZ that aren't within range of the Kordia Extend (used by Xtra Wireles) network so it's not simply a competition issue. Satellite just costs a lot at the moment.

Yeah, looking at the footprint maps at work, theres not many places that can get it. Then you've got trees etc.

Wirelessnation is really the only one worth looking at, farmside is 6-10 times slower and costs more! Free or cheap install is paid for with the huge over charged ammount over the contract term

I had farmside, i now have wirelessnation....

Oh and if you want more speed, wirelessnation can go up to 8mbps down and 6mbps up on the standard equipment, Install the heavy duty stuff and how fast is really up to you!

Want WI-FI in your area, up to 22km coverage ANYWHERE!

is there any way i can get service in th evalley then set up wifi for others in teh valley?
