Any ideas?

Telecom say my exchange is full and there is no way I can get broadband until they upgrade my exchange (who knows when that could happen) or if someone cancels, I am in a queue, but have no idea who is ahead of me!  It sucks, my next door neighbour got it a few weeks ago, I just can't believe that it is limited.  I would have got it ages ago if I had known it was limited.  I have looked at satalite and that is just too expensive.  I don't think that mobile broadband would give me a satisfactory speed, might as well stick with dial-up.  The other option is to put a wireless modem into my neighbours house and share their network but I live about 150meters away and don't think there is one on the market that would go that far.

I am pretty desperate as we are just in the midst of setting up a new home business and really can't manage without broadband - HELP!!

My friend has also got this story, the box is full and we can get any more gear in it.
They can plug in more landlines, he 's thinking of bridging the gap with a couple of v92modems.

Anyway, Have you got any photo's of your exchange, they are hard little things to find.
Maybe they are so small that telecom has lost them, almost sounds metaphorical ah.

<joke>You could always pretend you're a millionaire and go to the media ;) </joke>

In Hamilton I know personally of 2 people on rather long waiting lists, 1 with slingshot cant get it until April and another with Xtra who was told he cant get it until June! Both of them live in the same area (and they were both so smug about buying in a 'posh' area I am laughing on the inside hehe).

You're wireless idea via neighbour has merit, I am assuming you have an excellent relationship with them to leave the router running 24/7, but I am sure I have seen some wireless routers touting distances past 150m. If it was me I would be looking at buying from DSE with those specific conditions, if it failed DSE are fairly good with returns - basically it would be a matter of trial and error with different wireless routers and possibly boosters if required.

See http://www.gowifi.co.nz/directional24.html or Trademe for hardware. A 150 metre bridge between the two houses is no issue with any standard 16 dbm out access point if line of sight between buildings. One access point at each end of bridge and another access point providing signal to cover the house. Total = three access points, two directional antennas, one omnidirectional antenna, mounting hardware and cables.

After the rich lady on Paratai drive (Jenny Gibbs?) got ADSL, I believe what you need to do is call up and ask "Who do I have to bribe to get ADSL?", and they sort you out pretty quick.

My father in law did just that (he was told there was no room in his exchange), and got ADSL within a week.

Try it.

Just checking, but you're not in TelstraClears cable coverage area?

I live in rural Hamilton, so telecom is my only option!

Thanks for all your suggestions, still don't know what to do.  At the moment I am going to continue to pester telecom and hope that something gets done before I get too desperate!

I highly recomend the local newspaper. They would probably love a little story to blame on telecom.

kiaot, I sympathise with your situation. I've been waiting over 6 months now for the required work at my exchange to be completed.

When I moved house I decided to try out a new ISP, signed up for adsl, all looked good. After waiting (and hearing nothing) for a few weeks decided to cancel with them and try signing up with Xtra as I knew the stories about getting hooked up quicker with them than with others. Upon calling, the guy I got tapped on the keyboard for a few seconds then told me "No problem, there are 2 free ports at your exchange, you'll be hooked up by xx date". Once again, all good.

Received a message the next day saying there were no free ports after all and the exchange would possibly have work done on it by Jan/Feb this year. No date could (would?) be given, and no information was forthcoming about where I was in the queue. Repeated attempts at getting updated information over the last few months got me nowhere, and one guy even seemed to get pissed off that I should dare to ask!!

I've only recently been given a "firm" date for the exchange work to be completed, so my dialup nightmare might finally be over soon. But when they tell you that they have no free ports - I really wonder if they are actually full up or if they reserve 1 or 2 ports for "special" people (ie mates etc)..

Good luck :)
