Hi folks,

The results are starting to look pretty interesting... See www.GigaTown.co.nz

For those that don't know - various points are awarded for social activity,

The specifically say they will exclude any "automatic post" or bots - but as we all know there's still lots of ways to influence the results...

So should we....?

And we do know how - should we tell Chorus....?

(Disclaimer - I have passed on one method to their marketing manger but haven't heard any results as yet ;-)

Oamaru has (according to Wikipedia) has around 13K people in it but it has around 35K "votes"

Yes the person who has caused this many numbers counted has done good SEO but I am sure these are not 35K different people. I can see how they have done it.

Yes the person who has caused this many numbers counted has done good SEO but I am sure these are not 35K different people. I can see how they have done it.

But can't you vote multiple times using different media? So the number of people in the town vs number of votes is largely irrelevant is it not?

Well this doesn't make sense due to the wording below from the website...

"Points will be counted up for each town and adjusted relative to the town’s size to become ‘Gigapoints’, which are displayed on this website so you can keep track of your town’s progress. The adjustment for town size ensures that each town has the same opportunity to be the Gigatown."

And this wording I guess means you can only vote once as well.

"You can also participate by joining your town’s supporters’ network. You may only join a supporters’ network once."

So the number of points and the number of people who have voted are not the same then?

Maybe someone can explain how these points are worked out?

For example the Number of people living in Hunua is say 4000. Say they get 4000 votes thats 100% of the Population so they will "win" .

Please explain. :-)

"Gigapoints" are awarded for various interactions with social media...

"Every public posting with a #Gigatown[your town] hashtag on a nominated page will count, with a maximum of one point per posting. In addition, one point every time that post is shared.

Every tweet or retweet with a #Gigatown[your town] hash tag earns a point, with a maximum of one point per tweet per person.

Videos with a #Gigatown[your town] hashtag in either the title or description will get one point. In addition: One point for each comment that includes #Gigatown[your town]; and one point for each like (applies to likes for both videos and comments)."

Plus Flickr, Instagram and ways for comments on a blog or web site to be added and counted...

See how easy it is to "game" the results...?

So post on youtube/twitter etc and then search on google for where you post has been replicated and then submit that website and it will be counted (again)
