So I'm shifting in 3 days and just found out today that even though we're only shifting 5 minutes up the road there are no spare ports. We will be 4th on the waiting list and looking at a 1-2 year wait. (The shortest time someone has waited is a year). I've tried Rural Wireless but we aren't be in line of sight and I'm waiting to hear from Inspire if we'll be in line of sight for one of their towers but it's not looking very hopeful. Anyone else have any bright ideas for the Palmerston North region? So frustrating.

Sounds like you might be getting served off a Conklin - shove your address into http://www.chorus.co.nz/maps and if you're in a 1mbit zone you're on a Conklin. From here also you'll be able to see if that's getting an upgrade under the RBI.

Yes there is and yes they did and they were with Xtra but requested a disconnection from today so I suspect that route is too late?

We only found out the story today so we quickly rang them and they are going to try and cancel their disconnection but can't do it until tomorrow (they're not at the house and don't have the account details with them) but if the disconnection was set for today wouldn't it be too late tomorrow?

You would think so and another port waiter would get connected up straight away

We don't seem to be in any colour on the Chorus map! There is broadband out there though as the previous people had it but obviously not enough ports to go round and a slow moving population :-/

If you message me or email me "pl at telecom.co.nz" with your address and phone number at the address and I could see what the story is. I would however ring up and get the the disconnect stopped asap.

Thin Air http://www.thinair.net.nz/

Thanks Ray, we will hear from Inspire this morning, Thin Air are going to send out a technician and Rural Wireless have said no due to obstruction of the view of their tower. Unfortunately we are down a little dip and have a large pine plantation beside us, I'm thinking that doesn't bode well but fingers are still crossed for one of the other two...especially Inspire as they have towers in different locations.

The Chorus map says we are outside any planned coverage area. I find it just unbelievable that we are literally 5 minutes drive from a fairly large city and we may not have access to any broadband at all.

Just because you're outside a copper broadband area does not mean you're not able to get broadband. Copper can't cover everybody and the while the focus is on fibre for metropolitan areas it's all about delivering wireless solutions for well over 10% of the country that will never be able to get copper or fibre services.

The fact you're 5 minutes away is a moot point - DSL performance works to 3km, with people over that receiving a substandard connection. 5 mins drive is way more than 3km.

There are wireless solutions available to you, and based on the fact your area probably has an ASAM or Conklin servicing it is if it has no ports available, a wireless solution will probably deliver better performance. As well as the existing providers you also have Vodafone who's RBI network probably covers your area.

Thanks sbiddle for the reply. Indeed we are researching wireless options so far with no luck and options are running thin. And we were trying to connect with Vodafone in the first place who have said they can't help us so we're not resting on our laurels here, we're actively (and desperately) looking for solutions that won't require us to take out a second mortgage.

But are you looking at Vodafone DSL or Vodafone RBI? They're two totally different products, and Vodafone's RBI plans are also more expensive than many other resellers.
