Elmack: The Chorus map says we are outside any planned coverage area. I find it just unbelievable that we are literally 5 minutes drive from a fairly large city and we may not have access to any broadband at all.

Just because you're outside a copper broadband area does not mean you're not able to get broadband. Copper can't cover everybody and the while the focus is on fibre for metropolitan areas it's all about delivering wireless solutions for well over 10% of the country that will never be able to get copper or fibre services.
The fact you're 5 minutes away is a moot point - DSL performance works to 3km, with people over that receiving a substandard connection. 5 mins drive is way more than 3km.
There are wireless solutions available to you, and based on the fact your area probably has an ASAM or Conklin servicing it is if it has no ports available, a wireless solution will probably deliver better performance. As well as the existing providers you also have Vodafone who's RBI network probably covers your area.

Thanks sbiddle for the reply. Indeed we are researching wireless options so far with no luck and options are running thin. And we were trying to connect with Vodafone in the first place who have said they can't help us so we're not resting on our laurels here, we're actively (and desperately) looking for solutions that won't require us to take out a second mortgage.
