Hey guys,

Ive got fibre 100....My laptop is only getting speeds of 45.07mbps down and 7.84mbps up WIRED with Ethernet cable and 20mbps down WIRELESS....i can explain the wireless speeds as only have a 802.11g capable card but cant for the life of me work out the why my wired speeds are so rubbish.

Other laptops that mates have crank 93mbps on my connection.

My laptop is 22 months old and friends laptops are much newer....So after a massive investigation, telecom have put my speeds down to my laptop being old and under powered.

I spoke with a guy today who supposedly owns a PC shop and he reckons age of my laptop should not see a decrease in speed anywhere near what I have.

Does anyone have any ideas as to why I am only hitting 40mbps wired?

I should prob add that I have removed all movies, music etc and removed al programmes that i deemed to be unnecessary (although i don't know bugger al about computers so could have missed plenty) I have also added, run and then deleted every free anti virus, anti malware, anti spyware programme i could find so def don't have any virus's etc) I have also installed and run CCleaner and then deleted it.

My laptop is an Emachine
AMD Athlon(tm) Processor TF-20 1.6GHz

4gb RAM

32-bit operating system (windows 7)

150gb HDD

You you have the latest network drivers installed? Are your duplex settings set to auto negotiate, and if so, is the laptop negotiating the correct speed?

i agree with your provider, that CPU is hopeless, its single core, low power, - cheap and crap pretty much, i dont know if you told the PC shop that your machine was a netbook with that particular CPU in it, he might have changed his answer.

I dont think any driver and bios updates will significantly help you reach anywhere near the speed of your connection, but its worth doing them anyway

Google that model number and see what comes up. Could just be working to design or you may have a problem. I would suspect its a 10/100 Ethernet port. From the NIC on your PC i wouldnt ever suspect it would be as slow as 40Mbps

If the NIC is 10/100Mbps you will connect at 100Mbps to a router but will never get 100 Mbps throughput because of the way TCP works. Then if your NIC driver doesn't support full duplex correctly, or is not set for full duplex then you have that problem.

Also if TCP offloading is not set (or not supported) on the NIC then every time a packet arrives the NIC needs to interrupt the CPU to have the packet "decoded". Your laptop's CPU is pretty weak so it can't do everything at the same time, making it slower.

There may be other explanation, but the most logical one is that your laptop is the problem.

Thanks for that guys but ummmm...WoW lol I prob should have mentioned that I have a VERY limited PC knowlege I hjave no idea what TCP is or NIC or DUPLEX is.

any chance someone coud break it down for me into something I am more likely to understand....Effectivly what i got out of that is....I am trying to run an 18wheeler with a Honda civic engine?

How about this? There's a lot more to determining how fast your "Internet" goes than just what the headline number is on the product you buy. That's just one of a large number of variables that determines your speed.

If you have no idea about what TCP is, then you should ultimately just take the word of what a bunch of people here are saying.

One quick thing to check though - are you using the speedtest.net servers that Telecom NZ operate? You may have to manually select them on the map that Speedtest.net puts up. I can't at the moment see a way to give you a direct link sorry.

The most important thing to take in consideration here is this: if your friend's laptop connects at near line speed then the service provider is not a problem - it's your laptop.

Now, if this is software or hardware it's hard to decide without looking at some very specific things. One thing is for certain: I wouldn't consider "a guy who supposedly owns a PC shop" an expert...

If it was only negotiating half duplex he would be getting nowhere near that speed of 50mbps

also two other questions:

- are you testing to the Telecom servers?
- is your friend testing to the exact same server as you?

So yeap i guess I'll stick with that plan of buying a new laptop lol

Chances are I will end up going second hand via trademe. If it's not to much trouble, could you guys please tell me what specs to look out for? Money will be limited hence the need for trademe. If you could let me know what it is I will need that'd be greatly appreciated, ie processor, Hardrive, ram etc. In amongst some of the very amateur it research ive done in the last couple weeks, i see that everyone is talking about SSD (solid state) Is that something I should be looking for? Also do you have an SSD as well as an HDD or do ya have one or the other.

If you are limited in budget then SSD might get a bit too much. You certainly want something with a better processor and certainly 4GB RAM. A gigabit ethernet and 802.11n wireless is better.

As far as the speed test sites go that I am using... Speedtest.net and telecom.co.nz/speedtest. Speedtest.net gives me much faster results than the telecom page does. Telecom speed test page only has my WIRED download at 31mbps

I remember seeing you on Facebook regarding the same problem, the problem here is with your laptop as you've mentioned an iPad and other PC's are essentially able to max out the connection. Your CPU in that laptop is designed for very light duties, it's a single core AMD so you're not going to win any speed awards.

If you're wanting 100mbit internet you really need to get another laptop, this laptop you've got won't be able to utilise that connection speed like you're hoping for. For you, I think that 30mbit down, 10mbit up internet is perfectly acceptable and without doing speedtests you really wouldn't know the difference for what you appear to use your internet for.

100mbit is excellent for big families who go through tonnes of their cap, or more than one person, else 100mbit on most people is completely wasted.

So save your money, you don't need 100mbit.

Pretty good point. If you are the only user, a 100Mbps connection won't be a good use of money. It's more adequate for a family or large flat. Going with 30Mbps would help you save money for a new laptop...
