Hi,

I'm new to this website and New Zealand, we emigrated from the UK 6 months ago to Wellington!

I have been searching the internet for different internet providers for when we move into our new property in a months time. Being new to new Zealand and not being a computer expert or really know what I'm talking about, I need a little help on what companies are offering a good deal on broadband packages. We are a family of four and my 2 teenage girls are constantly on their ipads or computer downloading films, Facebook, watching UK TV, YouTube etc. So we need unlimited use (that's what we had in the UK). We have mobile phones with Vodafone so don't really need a landline but are considering tv packages.

Is there anyone that could recommend a good package for us, I've been looking so much, I'm confused with it all.

A lot depends upon your Wellington address.
Different suburbs have different options: ADSL, VDSL, fast cable and UFB (fibre) in different combinations.
Many different providers.
Which suburb will you be in?

Orcon VDSL Unlimited. The customer service is pretty terrible (unless you contact them via Twitter), but the product works brilliantly.

VodafoneNZ does TV over the HFC and Fibre network and offers speeds up to 130Mbps over the Cable HFC network

Vodafone also offer a deal on SkyTV with broadband packages. Have a look here http://www.vodafone.co.nz/naked-vdsl/ you can put your new address in to see what services are available.

Edit: Oops sorry missed the unlimited bit.

He did specify unlimited data, which sadly Vodafone don't offer.

We will be moving to Whitby so I'm not sure if all internet providers will cover that area?

have you actually looked at how much data you use?

you might find your better off going with a capped plan, which offers a better level of service and consistent.

Whitby is a reasonably large area, wanna narrow it down a little?

i would post i picture showing what your likely to get in the higher speed ranges, but it would seem the maps are offline for the time being.

Not sure if Whitby has UFB yet, but I would go for Orcon Unlimited Fiber.

with 2 teenage kids you absolutely want to stay away from ANY datacaps.

Vodafone does not do unlimited so ignore everybody who suggested them, since they seem to be ignoring your requirements.

Your main choices for unlimited data will be:

Orcon, Slingshot, and Bigpipe

Here are the high level pros and cons of each one (bearing in mind what you have said above)

Orcon.
$99 per month for unlimited data. requires 12 month contract, free basic modem 'rental' (so you have to return it at the end), free connection.
This includes landline as they don't have an option without it.

Slingshot
$90 per month for unlimited data naked DSL (no landline needed) requires 12 month contract. includes free basic modem (which you keep) and free connection

Bigpipe
$79 per month for unlimited data naked DSL (no landline needed) no contract, free connection. You'll need to provide your own modem ($20-30 for a basic one from Trademe second hand, more for a better one or for brand new, depending on your needs)

All three offer VDSL (2-3 times faster download, and 8-10 times faster upload) at a higher price if you can get it.

Slingshot and Orcon also offer Fibre at different prices too (again, whether you can get it depends on your exact address)

If you can get Fibre, you should go for that, otherwise VDSL, otherwise ADSL.

So fiber does not sound like an immediate option.

EDIT: UFB would be your best option if you can get it.

Fibre mate. I'm in Whitby and that's the go. I think all the old part of Whitby has been done.

a fair amount of fiber looks to already be laid..

VDSL coverage is equally covered for the most part.

Thanks again everyone for all your help.

Will be moving to Whitby (Discovery drive, area) so not sure if that's an older or newer area... seeing as we have been in Johnsonville since we arrived in NZ 6 months ago, still not sure of the areas.

When I put the address in the Orcon website, they said they could do fibre. I am just looking now at the other providers you have mentioned too.

FYI, I have two teenage daughters (and their visiting friends) who are constantly streaming and downloading. I mean constantly. Both my husband and myself game and if we watch anything, it's probably streamed. We do just fine with our 400GB cap - in fact, I don't think we've ever exceeded 300GB, so your point is invalid. With the discounts we offer for On Account mobiles (which she already pointed out she has with us) our offerings would more than satisfy Louise's requirements and still come out cheaper than the competition. Just saying.
