I have recently moved into a new house that is properly wired with Cat6 cable with the connector box in the upstairs cupboard. The ADSL wireless router is plugged into one of the in lines on the connector box. I want to then take some of the wired ethernet connections from the router and share them with other areas of the house to have a wired connection where the wireless won't reach.

The problem is that whoever built the house took some shortcuts to save money and all the ports around the house are BT ports rather than RJ45 ones. I know I could move the router to anywhere in the house, but is there some way to share one the ethernet connections from the router? I have no problem going from the router to a particular port in the house using the connector box, but I can't then plug it into a computer with ethernet because of the BT port. RJ45 to BT convertors seem to be pretty rare and I can't find any available for sale in NZ, only on amazon where they sell a Rj45 Socket To Bt 431a Plug.

Any suggestions would be appreciated, and I hope that makes sense, I'm pretty sure the Cat6 system is not actually called a connection box.
Thanks so much!

The BT's will only be wired with 2 wires so won't work with ethernet anyway, even if you convert from bt to rj45.

You need to have the actual jacks themselves swapped out with RJ45 modules and wired correctly.

You need to redo all the connectors.

I still find it amazing that electricians are still taking shortcuts installing BT jacks. I can only assume it's because they're still over $20 trade vs $3 for an RJ45 and they can charge a lot more and make a lot more with their margin on top.

Ok. Thank you!

That's a pain though. The house is only 5 years old and I don't know why you would put in a proper Cat system with only BT connections around the house.

I'm guessing changing a BT port to a RJ45 one probably isn't something I should attempt myself?

As long as you can follow instructions and aren't one of those people that gets frustrated easily and takes a hammer to everything and everyone, then you'll be fine if you attempt it yourself.

Just make sure you print out the wiring diagrams and such so you know which wire connects where, it's a pretty simple process.

BT really shouldn't be installed now. You can easily install a RJ45 jack, you will need a keystone, faceplate and a punch down tool. However, if you don't want to/feel comfortable doing it, any electrician should be able to do it.

There should be a law against electricians performing data work. An electrician is probably the reason there is a BT jack there now.

Yes there are electricians out there who know their stuff and are good with data. The vast majority however, are not.

Unfortunately the great unwashed purchase a new house and find their phones wont plug in (if they are correctly installed as RJ45 network) and the person on the blaming line is the sparkie who does not need any more hastle for trying to be "up to date" so BT it is.
