Hi all,

Have been reading through the sticky posts and some older threads to try and get an answer to my questions but I'm still not sure I understand...

Basically, I called Vodafone today to sign up to naked UFB unlimited. I planned to sign up for the basic UFB plan (Ultra Fast 30), but then the lady tells me that I would just be getting the same speeds as I am on ADSL2. I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

Can anybody confirm if she was merely trying to upsell me to a more expensive plan, or should I expect similar speeds on UFB 30 as on ADSL2?

I know speed is a complicated subject and not black and white at all, but any indication would be helpful.

Also, while I'm here, could anyone tell me if this router is acceptable to run fibre through, or should I get a new one?

I clarified with her about VDSL but she confirmed that ADSL2 and Fibre were the same speeds unless you upgrade to the 100 or 200 plans

30Mbps fibre will always be faster than ADSL2+ in terms of local bandwidth, but by how much is variable. ADSL2+ tops out at about 24Mbps downstream, on an ideal, short-length line. I would guess the average is something like 15 - 20Mbps. Fibre30 is, of course, 30Mbps.

If you are very close to the exchange or a cabinet then you max download speed on ADSL2+ would be 24Mbit. You are looking at UFB that is only 30Mbit so really not that much of a change. The improvement would be in the upload speed.

IMHO 30/10 is pointless and companies like Slingshot seem to agree since their slower speed is 100/20 (though it doesn't say that on their website yet afaik) instead of 30/10.

Fibre UPLOADS are always faster than ADSL.
An unusually fast ADSL connection might under ideal conditions (which are rare) DOWNLOAD almost as fast as an entry-level fibre connection.
In the real world, fibre is faster than ADSL.

No idea about that router, you'd need to establish whether it supports VLAN10 tagging on the WAN. Any reason why you wouldn't just use what Vodafone supply?

Also someone should mention latency on fibre is far superior to ADSL2+. ADSL2+ latency can vary wildly but fibre is going to run single digits I dare say (then again so does VDSL2 on a good line profile).

Thanks for the replies.

I gather now that entry Fibre will be better than ADSL2, but not by enough that I should pay more for it. I think I'll fork out the extra $10/month and get the fibre100 plan.

As for the router, unsure if it supports VLAN10 tagging on the WAN. I have to sign into a contract with Vodafone to get their router which I wasn't planning on doing.

You'll need to sign a 12 month contract for UFB regardless, you may as well take their router with it.

It seems like you can sign up without being on contract, but you pay $248 installation and get no modem. They really only give you one choice here.

There is MyRepublic or BigPipe who offer plans without the contracts.

MyRepub might work I dunno but I thought Bigpipe is BYOR?

It also sounds like a sales pitch to get you onto the more expensive UFB plan.

If I were you I would start on the 30/10 and upgrade if you wanted more speed. Of course with Spark but I am biased ;) but our UFB is the most consistent if Truenet are to be believed.

But that's just me since I can't get UFB and have no idea when my area is due to be done.

30/10 is fine, I'm on it and have trouble maxing it out. If you regularly bring in multiple streams or have multiple gamers in your house maybe 100Mbps is worthwhile, but otherwise it probably won't help you all that much. For only $10 though doesn't much matter.
