Hey guys, I'm new to all this and must admit am not technologically-inclined... I hope you guys can help me out here

I'm having a bit of dilemma with using BitTorrent.

I'm using a Mac with the latest OSX, Leopard, installed. Just got my broadband connection set up a couple of days ago. Am with Orcon.

I bought the wireless router, Apple Airport Express, and am fine with connecting to internet wirelessly.

However, i can't seem to get my Bittorrent to work though...

I understand that I would require a static IP address but have no idea why and how to do that.

Furthermore, whenever I tweak the IP address 'manually' when setting up my Airport Express using Airport Utility, my internet connection would be lost.

Further info:

I'm using the Dynalink RTA1320 router as well.

Could someone please help me out here. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

However, that was the first place i looked in for info on setting it up... but it just won't work for me

Try the test I did with firefox (go about:config in your address bar and right click, choose new string then add the setting I mentioned in the above post). If pages no longer load, this proves orcon is entirely evil.

Have you configured Utorrent to use the correct port that you fowarded?

Before looking at port forwarding manually, I would look simply for the upnp (universal plug and play) option in your routers setup. If i remember right, your model does have upnp.

Next use something like Azureus (my favourite) or utorrent (i think will do it)
These clients will map and test the ports in the router for you automatically when you start them. Azureus also has the ability to manually test it for you.

Also if you are using Azureus, set the max connections (tools > options?) to something like 120-140. The RTA1320 is a very cheap modem (mine was free when i signed up for slingshot)
The reason I say to limit the connections is because the modem's internal software crashes when it reaches 150 (or there abouts). I found that if i visited msn.com and then started a torrent, let it crash and then tried google.com - google would not work, it wouldnt connect to any new torrent peers, and msn.com continued to work. Funny thing and basically a modem restart was required to get it all going again. I Kept doing this and lowering the azureus connections each time untill it wouldnt crash.

Sorry - if you use msn messenger or skype at the same time as your torrent client the you may want to lower your clients connections to something like 80-100.

hi there,
thank you for your help. I've sort of figured out whats wrong, it seems that Orcon throttles Bittorrent during peak hours...

I'm not pleased with this act they've imposed. but at least something's better than nothing right?

What speeds are you getting? Even on go-large I usually get 160kB/s during peak times.

I'm also on Orcon with the RTA1320 modem/router, and have the exact same problems...

Pretty much from mid afternoon until the next day, torrents are red in Utorrent or any other torrent program. I have setup port forwarding using http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Dynalink/RTA1320/Utorrent.htm. Although when I click on the port forward test in Utorrent it still says its not open.

Not sure if it's just Orcon, or my setup.

Looking for any suggestions too
