Hi all,

I have a really wierd problem with my ADSL that i can't get a straight answer from Ihug about.

I moved house a week ago, and had my broadband transferred to the new address.  Set up my computers the same as the previous address (which had a good broadband connection, for NZ standards anyway ;)) and got the internet - no problems so far.

everything was going ok until i noticed that every time i picked up any phone in the house ADSL would lose sync.  if it didn't or managed to regain sync, i would get speeds that fluctuated rapidly from 17kbps to 1500kbps.

I can also hear ADSL on the phones which i thought were supposed to be stopped by the filters

i thought my filters may have been damaged in the move so i replaced them, still the same issue.

I got a Central Filter installed on the main line into the house - STILL THE SAME PROBLEM!!

I thought maybe the filter was bung, so i got the guy back who replaced it, and tested it with a new cable bypassing all house wiring.  same ADSL sync loss.  at this point i am going insane!

I have changed my ADSL Router to another modem I had at home - still loses sync.

Called Ihug who referred it to telecom who have neglected to help me so far...

My question is - Does anyone know what is going on!  I am losing my mind.

Hi Anthony,

First, welcome to Geekzone Smile

From your description it sounds very much as though your ADSL modem is plugged in to the wrong side of the filter, on the same circuit as all the phones.

If you have a Central Filter (splitter) installed, the technician should have installed a special socket -- probably marked ADSL -- where your modem MUST be plugged in.

With a Central Filter, you can ONLY plug your modem into one place -- the socket marked ADSL.

Is that where you have your modem plugged in to?

Hi grant_k,

Thanks for the warm welcome.

the modem is plugged into the ADSL jack, phones straight into their respective jacks.  ADSL modem works on both sockets (as it should) however does the same fault on both sockets.  seems to work a little better being in ADSL socket (like it should.)

the tech that installed filter, that also came back after i asked him, pulled all house wiring of the circuit and wired on a fresh cable and split 2 pairs off to two jacks, filtered pair to phone jack, unfiltered pair direct to adsl jack.

tested with his blue field phone tool and adsl modem, still same problem.  also when adsl modem is plugged in he got those adsl noises across the filtered phone side, unplugged adsl modem, crystal clear voice line.  he said it has to be on telecoms side somewhere as he's ruled out my equipment and house cabling.

he said he's using a commercial grade filter at my house, the same they install into companies that use PABX systems etc........

Well...  I have to say, you have done everything that could possibly be done to eliminate the problem at your end, so far as I can see.

Maybe it is a faulty port at the exchange / roadside cabinet, or maybe your line has severe crosstalk from someone else's ADSL modem.

Whatever, it's a really perplexing problem and I hope you can get it sorted soon Smile

Cheers,
Grant.

ahhh.....I had the exact same problem last year and the problem lies in the exchange...the "port card" at exchange is faulty....i just wish you luck to get telecom to go to the exchange ASAP and replace it...it took them 3 weeks to go to the exchange after constant abusing by me....

Do whatever you want to do man.

Make sure they also fully test the line for all faults. I had a similar issue with dropping sync with incoming phone call, it was an earth leak on the line.

Hi Guys, just an update.

I called IHUG again and they organised a technician to come out, the tech turned up on monday and said he knew what the fault was because he had seen it before, and would be fixed in 30 minutes. he rekoned it was the port at the exchange, so he left a "call back if there are any more problems within 7 days card" and went and swapped the ports.

later that afternoon, when i got back home i found that the adsl still dropped out when i received a call or made one, and it takes waaay longer to sync the line.

i called the 0800 000 FIX number the next morning and gave them my reference number, they said a tech will be back out that avo. No Show.

called again the next morning, they said no job had been logged and that i have to call IHUG and log another fault. i said it was the same fault, that wasn't fixed, they didn't really care. so I rang ihug, and they logged another fault.

called the next day to see if a tech will be coming out with my new reference number. they said yes, he will be there this afternoon. No Show.

man I am getting really peeved at this. I was trying to work from home yesterday, and every time anyone called me to do something, i got booted off the vpn to work.

I wish telecom/downer would stop making excuses and actually come through with what they say.

we will see if they turn up today................
