Hello all
Would be grateful for advice re broadband and phone connection/voip as been getting mixed messages.
We would be moving into our own home in wellington very shortly and would like to establish a broadband connection asap.I have been told that we would first need to establish a 'telecom' connection to make the line active which would be needed to start the broadband which would mean telecom line rental.We were interested in Voip/n-dsl for its obvious low toll rates etc.Is this true? or is there an option of starting a telephone connection/line rental and broadband/voip/n-dsl with one company right from scratch.(I believe the people already staying there have a telecom number).Telstra does not have their cable connection where we are moving to,so it has to be adsl. (not keen on wireless just yet) I have looked at many isp's websites and reasearched these forums,do people have any views on who would be ideal for our needs.We are not too keen on sky tv etc and do not tend to make many phone calls outside the local calling area(atleast for now)

Hi Ravi,

Xnet are launching their N-DSL service (called Xnet Fusion) on January 7, so it's not long to wait now. Here is a humungous thread dealing with all the issues in exhaustive detail:

By signing up for Xnet Fusion, you won't need to get a phone line installed first; WorldxChange will take care of it all for you with just one installation fee to pay.

The toll calling rates with Xnet's VoIP service (called VFX) are very attractive. Have a look here for full details:

Finally, you will need to get yourself an ADSL router with VoIP ports. The best one for your situation will be the WAG54GP2V2 as shown here:

I spoke to someone at xnet yesterday and he said fusion would be pand running in 2nd or 3rd week of jan,so I hope you are right about the 7th jan as we are moving to our home on that date.I was using netgear DG834G router in the UK for broadband,so hopefully it would work and add the PAP2T adapter to n-dsl.Is there any alternative to the linksys PAP2T that will work as well?

All the devices which are supported by VFX are shown on this page:

Other devices, such as those from vendors other than Linksys are NOT supported. The reasons for this have been discussed many times on Geekzone (have a look in the Xnet/VFX forum if you are interested).

If you are intending to send faxes, I would recommend ordering a SPA2102 instead of a PAP2T. However, the PAP2T is by far the easiest device to set up if you want a standalone ATA. If you want an all-in-one device, I would recommend the WAG54GP2V2 as mentioned above.
