hiya all. first post here and looking for some help. i know in the past i have had a reasonable download speed but dont actually know what it was in kbps but recently i have noticed that it has decreased noticably. i am with ihug on broadband 3 plan. i have not been reduced to 64 beacuse of excessive downloading. i have noticed that youtube downloading has reduced in speed as well as web pages. i could normally hace several pages loading up at a good rate but not anymore. i have had abit of a play around with tweeks. tcp optimzer etc. is anyone able to tell me what the xp defaults are or a link to for internet  broadband connections as this may be able to get me back to a better starting point. i ran a speed test at speedtest.net. download was 69 and upload was 127. i am sure i have done this test before quite awhile ago and got a higher download speed than that. any help would be greatly appreciated. regards

First off, because your results looks like a 'restricted speed' of 64/128, restart your modem. I had a problem where the D-Link modem actually stuck to my reduced speed for a week. Restarting it cleared it, and everything was perfectly fine (I too am on bb3, and frequently go over 20GB).

Come back with more details if that doesn't work.

What modem are you using?

Go through to your ADSL sync and connection results and see what they say.

Also, as the speeds really do suggest a restricted speed, I really think you should talk with the (slowish) ihug help desk. See what they take you through and have to say.

P.S. You might want to paragraph your posts, the first one was a little bit hard to read through. Wink

First determine what the sync speeds, downstream attenuation etc. are from the router. I can't see any point using speedtest when the service appears crippled.

To find routers ip address, type "ipconfig /all" at a shell prompt (Start/Run/cmd). Default gateway address for appropriate interface is the router's addresss. Type address into web browser.

EDIT: default address for 502T is 10.1.1.1.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Usually D-Link ones have an address at 10.1.1.1

Go into your web browser, enter the address in, and enter the username and password (usually admin/admin - change your password if you haven't!)

Downstream noise margin at 7 is way too low. I would swap out router first.

N.B. TCPOptimiser should keep default settings.

Yo Drizzt001 - talk to your ISP. You should be able to bounce back & forward with the helpdesk & get to the bottom of the problem.

"I would swap out router first."

you mean get rid of it and get a new one? seems a bit harsh since i belive i have had better downloads before this. is there a way of changing snr margin downstream = 7

By swap out he means try a friends router if you do not have a spare.
That way you can gaurantee that it is not your router causing your problems. And if it is, then all you need to do is buy a new one.

Before logging fault makes sure all phones, alarms and Sky decoders have filters. Disconnect all from the line to see if it helps.

This http://dmt.mhilfe.de/ would be helpful to analyse connection but doesn't work with 502T, need broadcom chipset as in Dynalinks or Netgear DG834GT.
