Hi there,
i have been looking around to find an answer, but haven't been lucky so far.
I am think about changing from telecom broadband and phone,
i saw woosh has a pretty good deal on a combination of two.
can anybody tell me how coverage is in wellington.
i know they have been working on that, so i was wondering if it is ok by now?

You mean Woosh Wireless coverage or Woosh DSL?

i was thinking about getting the wireless one, which would be easier,
especially since i want to change phone line as well

Probably not much use, but I'm on wired and I don't have a problem, other than the slow download speeds (but I live up in Maungaraki and the lines are rubbish up here - the excuse 'it's Telecoms lines' kind of rings true up here). In saying that, the speed has improved in the last couple of months, and I did nothing...

Their support is a worry though - take that seriously into account if joining. They don't listen, and fob off is second nature. I don't have problems, but if I did I would go spare (as I'm an ex-IT helpdesk person so being told to reboot would drive me nuts)

Very true about the support - you will need patience. It's been a while since I've used woosh wireless in Wellington - but I have friends with it in Wellington and Auckland and it is fine as a cheaper alternative to Vodafone or Telecom data cards, but there are mixed results when using it as a fixed connection. I have freinds in the CBD and they have generally had equivalent average speeds to a 256k DSL connection, even with Woosh's 1.5mbps+ advertising. Also, they have hefty disconnection fees and they retain ownership of the equipment. For the plan prices I would recommend getting a DSL or Cable plan in Wellington if you have the option and don't need portability. If you really want a cheaper phone you could get Naked DSL or get one of the higher range telstra plans that dont force you to buy a landline and then get a line from the likes of WxC, iTalk, Skype etc etc that allow you to get a local dial in number.

Woosh is good if you dont have/want the option of a fixed connection, otherwise you might as well just get DSL or cable. You could also look at Vodafone and Telecom with their data card plans depending on what you want to use it for. You can do neat things like get a router that the data card plugs in to or maybe buy a 2nd hand laptop to share the connection over a LAN.

Dont get woosh, they dont care about their customers and provide a usless serivce.

I was with them for 3 years and the internet was always messing up, and then they randomly capped my internet speeds to dial up for months, until finally telling me i had to switch to another plan, at which point i just left the isp.

Try xnet if you want to change your isp, they are pretty decent.

kia ora ,
i just wanted to point out to anyone who on woosh wireless that has a $190 disconnection fee that if you want to change isp it might pay to call woosh and change to a wired dsl plan (they change for free) , because your disconnect fee drops to $90.

Hi,
I have a woosh connection for last 2 years.This is a wireless connection.It works fine for me.I use it in both home and work. Just the placement of modem is most important preferably near a window.

Hi,
I have a woosh connection for last 9 months.This is a wireless connection. And Seems to be fine 5% of the time, I'm a very busy person and waiting on the phone for up 45min isn't the greatest. Email support forget it. I get a range of speeds 56k to 2mb most of the time it hangs around the 256k mark in and around the city. At the moment i'm getting max 256k , same modem placment etc max delta at tower, near on very perfect signal, maybe in a couple of days it might jump back up to 1.5 mb, who knows with a company like this.

Satyr: Try xnet if you want to change your isp, they are pretty decent.

I agree with Satyr here. I have had VFX fusion (naked DSL and VFX phoneline) for coming up to 2 months now and working great. Xnet do provide a great customer support even to the extent of coming into these forums to answer questions or solve some problems.

Avoid Woosh's VoIP service like the plague! It is too unstable and a lot of people I know who signed up for it are less than impressed.

At certain times, it does work well, but when Woosh makes changes to the site's Node-B software, expect more than a few outages.

Woosh is the worst ISP i have ever had the displeasure to deal with. On top of trying to rip all Orbit Unlimited customers off, they have taken money off my credit card without asking(When they owed me money), and now they look like they are going to try to charge me for a month of Woosh i don't have. and haven't had since January. I am so angry with them. Glad i changed to Xnet

would be a depressing thread if i was considering woosh

but i came to southland and there weren't too many alternatives to telecom so i gave woosh a go

2 years later and it just keeps trundling along

i'm on the phone + wireless broadband option, was warned i was at the edge of coverage

they suggested i stick the modem thingie up on the roof and point it to nearest repeater, at Browns

last month had the roof reroofed and the roofers rotated the receiver roughly 180 deg and it still works

they also bumped the sky dish and no tv, had to pay to get that back

woosh techie advice is okay, i don't demand instant fixes or abuse them on a bad day

broadband speed isn't flash, but multi-MB downloads while i sleep seem fairly quick

biggest problem with the phone is the 931 number that makes people think it must be an odd mobile

and of course only local calls are free, which out in the boonies means another $6-$10 a month when you call

.... Invercargill....

beats $40 a month in line charges on the meter before telecom charges you the same $6-$10 on top to ring

i'm sure i'll have the problems all the other geeks on this thread have, will let you know when i do

In my experience, if you want 'broadband', Woosh is definately not that. I had their 20GB plan for a year, and it was hopelessly slow, even in the Wellington CBD. I was living in a hostel and it got so bad that I ended up getting another router off a friend in the hostel and making a dual-wan internet connection, which required a *nix box as well as a windows server just to manage the traffic. Even then the speeds were never above 200kb/s, a far cry from the theoritical 1mb/s at the time. Their phone support is average, and if there is a problem, the default response is "Your signal Quality is very poor" even though im looking at the page displaying the signal at the time. As for the customer service, lets not go there. I was on hold for an hour and a half one afternoon, only to be hung up on. When i rang back it was another 40 minutes before they answered my call. I now have Xnet fusion and I'm very very happy with the service. Its consisitently fast, even at peak times, with a ~8mbps connections speed, sometimes getting up to 10mbps. The call center is a little shabby, but i havent had to call much so its not a big deal.

In short - I would rather lose a limb than get them to be my ISP
