For those of you without any Fibre options this may seem frustrating.

I live in a newish subdivision that was fibre only long before fibre was common (FTTH?), originally we were tied to Wxc at eye watering prices, then a few years back something happened (don't know the technical term - unbundled exchange?) and we were able to use a few more providers, initially I think this was only Snap.

Surprisingly a few months back they started ripping up the roads in our new subdivision to lay more fibre, as I understand it, this was Enable. We now appear to have access to all ISP's.

My question is, if I switch to an Enable ISP will they have to re-run their fibre into my house, or is the connection done at the street? Would I need a different Ont installed?

As I live down a rear section in a shared private lane I am not keen on going through the hassle if it does need to be re-run.

I'm not 100% sure but I expect they would have to run new fibre, they aren't allowed to use each others ducts etc, so yes, new ONT etc

I work in the industry and yes its a new run of fibre/ont to get you sorted in a old chorus area

SOME TIMES the tech MAY USE the existing internal duct to provide service if this is easier and you get a good tech.

Which Service Provider are you interested in? By now, most are available on Chorus fibre in Christchurch.

Would it be possible(allowed) for Enable to buy the fibre infrastructure from Chorus in these situations?

No, and even if they could it wouldn't make any sense because the architecture is very different.

These original BoF areas were converted to UFB areas a few years ago now so can easily offer service to any RSP who has a handover in the region. Some don't, so can't offer service. In the early days of BoF no other provider but WxC put their hand up to offer services, so they ended up being the only provider despite their being no restrictions on other providers.

Sorry, I was thinking more about the actual underground ducting and fibre, rather than the electronics installed in the cabinets.

Is there a way to tell? Was considering Big Pipe or Voyager.

Theres no electronics installed in cabinets since optical fibre can carry signals for many kilometres without any drop in speed as you would expect with DSL.

Enable could buy ducting or lease actual dark fibre from Chorus if it went to the right places and if Chorus was willing to sell. But I doubt Chorus would ever sell their infrastructure in a million years, since owning those fibres in the street is the reason for Chorus' existence.

Time to find a new industry!
