Hi, can I get some advice on moving ISPs please!

I'm currently with Orcon and looking at moving to Inspire (if there is an ISP you'd recommend instead please let me know. I am a noob as per my name :) so customer service is really important to me. I'm in Wellington).

I have my own domain name for my email and another domain name for my website.

Should I move everything over to Inspire? Or would it be better to have somewhere like Domains4Less look after my domain name? I don't have fibre yet but am planning to get it (which has pre-empted considering moving ISPs).

Yeah I was thinking that would be better so making ISP shifting easier in the future. Any recommendations as to where to take the domain names?

I've used a few domain registers and have had good times with 1stDomains and Discount Domains. Each have hosted email plans on offer to go with your domain as well as website hosting. Other companies worth a note IMHO are, RegisterDirect and OpenHost

+1 for keeping it away from your ISP, unless you want to deal with this again next time you want to change ISP.

There are a number around. Personally I always try and stick with the bigger dns hosting providers as they tend to stick around and have their systems streamlined.

The flip side is having someone like inspire looking after it would make it easy if you have no knowledge of what to do. You could still have everything hosted with them even if you should decide to (shock horror) move away from them as an ISP.

Really it depends what services you want with your domain. Registrars make almost no money from selling domains, especially the cheap ones, and some will charge for things like phone support. They rely on upselling you other services. So if you want a lot more handholding with your domain and better support quality from NZ based people, you will tend to pay more.

I host my websites on AWS, which is easy enough since I'm qualified in it. Alternately digital ocean would be a good option, using the free or paid plan for the CloudFlare CDN, so NZ users get fast speeds.

I've had good experience with 1stDomains for a couple of domains. Haven't had to deal with their support though.

Sounds like you are looking for web hosting, so you need a host that has a plan that allows multiple domains/ websites. I would never recommend using an ISP for web hosting, I would use a specialist host instead, and I wouldn't go for the bottom priced providers as hosting quality can vary a lot, and the cheaper ones tend to have heaps of websites on the servers. Perhaps if you let us know what your hosting requirements are. I would suggest one that uses cpanel, as that is an easy to use control panel for managing your hosting and email from.

Thanks... at the moment my site is just a few static pages. In the future it's possible I'll want to host a forum on it, but TBC.

PS - I have two domains, one for my website and another for my email address. The website domain is at Domains4less so I'm thinking maybe I should shift my email domain there too and then switch to Inspire?
