Hi,

I wonder if anyone had similar experience. I've asked Slingshot to upgrade my connection from ADSL to VDSL. My property was shown as eligible for VDSL on both chrous website and slingshot's website. However, I was told that I may not get a good connection as one of the testing they've done is slightly above threshold. I don't know what it is the thing they've measured on, but it's something like 12 is threshold and mine is 13. They told me that I may have an unstable connection or even degraded speed after the upgrade, but they also said it could work without problem or even having a much faster speed. I am not sure if they are being geninue here or just trying to avoid antyhing that may be complicated.

If I go ahead with the upgrade and doesn't work out, I will have to pay the disconnection fee to fall back to ADSL which is the something I want to avoid, so I did some check myself around the cabinets near my property. There are two cabinets near by and one of them is around 800-900 meters and the other is around 400-500 meters. This is a direct measurement so the actual distance has to be longer than that.

Has anyone got this problem and still went ahead with upgrade ? Did it work out ?

Well you could always ring another ISP and say you are looking at changing but before you do can they confirm you can get it.

However most of the time ISP's don't want to give customers the run around and will not just say "no you can't have it" for no reason.

Also just because a cabinet is less than 1k away does not mean the copper is. When I was in browns bay I could see the exchange building (like 150 metres away) but we had about 1.5 - 2km's of cable to it

As above the copper could run down one side of the street and then back around it does not always go directly to the exchange / cabinet

The attenuation limit for VDSL is technically 15dB. However, as mentioned by your ISP, if it's higher than about 10, it's not advisable as it could be unstable. Individual circumstances vary so you could always give it a try and see what happens.

Knowing the distance to the cabinet is not useful as that does not indicate the length of the cable.

Your ISP's policy of charging a disconnection fee to change back to ADSL is not very customer friendly though. Other ISPs will let you change plans any time with no fee and no contract required.

Thanks for the info, you are right it is 15db, I've called the call centre again and was told mine is between 14 and 17 db. Regarding the disconnection fee, it turns out the last rep I've spoken to was actually giving me bullsxits. It is clearly stated on their website that if it is below 15MB then it is free of charge for rolling it back.

It's amazing that each time you call them you get completely different set of information.

That is a very poor performing line indeed. I think you need a master filter for starters, but a line in that state is asking for trouble if you switch to VDSL.

A master filter may well improve your ADSL performance, but forget VDSL.

I've swapped the modem with a different one. Now I am getting significantly improvement over attenuation. Especially that SNR. Now I am getting 8.5Mb down whereas previously it was only around 5Mb. I think there may be a couple of issues here but I will definitely get a better modem. Previously it was Asus RT-N66, it either wasn't setup correctly or it was faulty.

Your downstream attenuation is still 27dB. This is far higher than the recommended cutoff of 15dB. Chances are that VDSL will perform poorly.
Very poor house wiring could contribute to such a high attenuation in which case a master filter would be beneficial for xDSL. Getting one will improve adsl but I wouldn't bother with vdsl unless that attenuation drops significantly

No. Chorus would be 12dB. This is ULL.
