I recently moved in to a rural property on the outskirts of Hamilton, renting a detached unit next to the landlord's house. It has been a bit of a challenge trying to set up broadband to this unit since I am not familiar with how things work in NZ. The landlord has copper broadband wired to the house and also extended to the unit I am renting since I saw there is a jackpoint on the wall (photo attached), but he is not keen on me using his connection and told me to sort out my own connection.
So I contacted a whole bunch of broadband providers, and was informed that to have a new/second copper connection set up, I would need to dig a trench from the side of the road to the unit. The approximate distance based on google maps is 170 m so I don't think this is a viable option especially as I am only renting. I also came across Lightwire which specializes in rural wireless broadband and after asking for more info, I signed up to get one of their guys to come and see if a decent signal strength could be found, though they said due to the amount of trees in the area things do not look good (and the lead time for this probably-for-nothing visit is 3-4 weeks away).
Are there any other options that would suit my situation I could look at ? I am thinking if this lightwire thing doesn't work, I might as well propose paying 50% of the landlord's internet bill to use his connection instead since that seems like the easiest solution. Provided he agrees to this, what would be the simplest way for me to set-up wifi for the unit ?
