Bit of a Xmas prezzie from Compass - I just got an e-mail saying they will now charge for an e-mail address. Welcome to the 1980's.

Given Vodafone's recent contribution to e-mail chaos, is this some mysterious NZ thing, that somehow e-mail is hard here? Or is this worse - anyone know if something's up at Compass? Given their general impression of barely holding together, are they about to go belly up, leading to the fun of getting yet another ISP?

The reality is that email IS hard.

With the lowering margins in the ISP (Internet Service Provider) market providers will be second guessing taking the hit of offering email for free.

Running a email platform does require a reasonable amount of work and that's not counting the support. If you sell it you'll be expected to support it, I just don't see a big enough margin for any ISP these days to offer and support email.

I would be surprised if we don't see a lot of other providers following suit with Compass or Vodafone.

Get a free email address. Xtra is free, although like Yahoo, I assume they still pay for it. Things cost. If you get a free email address, say Gmail, you are the product. Or you could get a domain and email address, also not free.

When its free, its not really free.

Time to pay for a service. Petrol is not free, same with power, and so on, and so on. Compass no doubt pay people to manage all this. They are not free either.

Its not 1980's, its 2017.

Pay.

Yep. Its free, but it costs, its an added value service. But it aint free to provide

There are so many email services out there, free or charged, the choice is there. So the OP can choose easily enough.

Understood. Email with Spark is free, but its not free for Spark. They provide an added value service, at a cost, for free. As with the MANY email threads here, the common advise is ditch ISP email, and get a domain address. Thats not for the average Joe or Joanne. But you are correct.
