Located on Banks Peninsula previously (until 10 or so days ago) had connection with approximately "Maximum downstream rate of around 7000 (kbit/s) with Line standard ADSL2+".

Since then "Maximum downstream rate" is at its best 4700(kbit/s) dropping to under 2000(kbit/s) at times and line standard is now "ADSL_G.dmt.bis". Upstream rate has not changed and is still between 800 to 1000 (kbit/s). I appreciate that the connection speed will vary but would have thought that a reduction of 35% plus is not normal.

Have contacted vodafone about the issue they did a modem software update and port reset (I think thats what they said) but there has been no improvement.

Yesterday tried a different modem but again no improvement.

The connection had been getting better over the years something I only thought would continue.

Also in the past when checking Broadband availability maps I am 99% sure that the results use to say the best connection available at the address was ADSL2+. Looked yesterday and this is no longer the case, results said "Wireless is Available (0.25-5 Mbps down 0.25-0.25 Mbps up) and that ADSL is Not Available"

Any suggestions.
Thanks Jon

This sounds like a classical line fault situation.

As you have tried another modem, you have confirmed it's not a faulty modem.

Call back vodafone, log a fault to chorus.

further digging, are you sure your not always getting g.dmt? looks possibly like a ADSL1 only location..

Maybe DM me the address and i'll compare against neighboring connections for a better view over things :)

Water on copper lines will cause issues as well and cause SYNC rate to drop

Silly question - are you perhaps comparing max line speed with actual connection performance? Banks Peninsula has some very long and old lines. There are many reasons why performance could degrade and Chorus is probably best placed to answer the question

Located just out of Little River

Speed test to Vodafone server Christchurch @ 1.06 am 2.22Mbps, with modem stats of "Downstream line rate 4259kbit/s Maximum downstream rate 4464 kbit/s".
Previously would have result of 6.0 Mbps plus.

Up till 10 or so days ago was definitely on a ADSL2+ connection

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Bit of rain last week so maybe effect of moisture.

Also while trying to post this reply connection died has now reconnected in ADSL_2plus mode but at an even lower rate, now"Downstream line rate 3565 (kbit/s)".

p.s. unable to get screen shot to show/work, so here is an alternative link ADSL Capture

In Okuti Valley, as I said in original post broadband availability maps used to say ADSL/ADSL2+ now https://broadbandmap.nz/ returns a result of

"Wireless is Available

Data from Altra Internet

Speeds (variable) 0.25-5 Mbps 0.25-0.25 Mbps

ADSL is Not Available".

Right ok, so ADSL2+ coverage is valid in that case although you will be at the end of the tail.

if your closer to the lefthand side (say the blue and green dots) i'd expect improvements can be made.

Overall drop in speed, profile struggling to sync correctly. Sounds very much like to me that you have a line fault.

Thanks to those  who replied for your help. Have contacted Vodafone again, they confirmed that the connection speed had been at 7Mbps and are sending out someone from Chorus to investigate/rectify the cause of the drop off.

Thanks again

Network guy from Downer come out. Line restored to previous connection speeds, connecting at

Upstream line rate (kbit/s): 1097
Downstream line rate (kbit/s): 6966
Maximum upstream rate (kbit/s): 1161
Maximum downstream rate (kbit/s): 7780
Upstream noise safety coefficient (dB): 7.8
Downstream noise safety coefficient (dB): 6.6
Upstream interleave depth: 0
Downstream interleave depth: 0
Line standard: ADSL_2plus
Upstream line attenuation (dB): 26.5
Downstream line attenuation (dB): 48
Upstream output power (dBmV): 10.1
Downstream output power (dBmV): 19.3
Downstream interleave depth: None
DSL up time: 0 days 9 hours 45 minutes 29 seconds

Now just wondering if VDSL or fibre will ever be an option, I won't be holding my breath.

Thanks all for assistance Jonnz
