Hello!
After switching from ADSL to VDSL and not seeing any increase in speed, I've decided to get the wiring in my house sorted. I'd like to have a master filter installed and a dedicated jackpoint done as well, since the wiring in my house is very old. This is also what I've seen numerous people suggest as a starting point for fixing speed issues.

From what I can tell, the line enters the property via overhead line and terminates in a box up high sort of close to our power line, which is why I didn't want to do it myself. I can provide a photo of this if required via PM. The new jack-point can be in any location, the closer the better from what I have read. Our house is a rental but our landlord is pretty chill, so getting permission won't be an issue.

Oh 1.1km to cabinet might be better off on ADSL2+

Yeah, that might be the case. In any case, wouldn't sorting the wiring in my house do good for both services?

How do I determine which would be better? (VDSL/ADSL2+ that is) I know where the cabinet for my street is as it's fairly obvious with chorus vans showing up there once and a while. Do I track the distance to it following the road, and use that?

I'm mainly looking for better upstream since i'm sitting at about 0.8 right now which is just not good enough.

That attenuation doesn't look like 1.1km.

Fraser is certainly the man for the job.
Upon arivel supply him one cup of coffee for best results.

If that attenuation is anything near correct. Cleaning up the line and going adsl2 will likely be your best option.

Esspically on rural cabinets where vectoring is enabled, 17a has a very low power level in us0.

If I was to switch back to ADSL, how would I know if I was getting ADSL2+, or not? As I recall, our download speed did increase with VDSL and I don't ever remember seeing ADSL2+, just ADSL on this page.

You would not have been on ADSL1 it would have been ADSL2+.

error rates seem a little high. i get the feeling you have been unplugging the dsl line messing with things in that sync though?

G.INP is active on your line, that's a vectored VDSL line.

I would let fraser do his magic and advise as someone physically in the field.

my gut response would have been Switch back to ADSL2+. on a clean line you will get about 1.1~1.2mbit up with 6db snr.

I'm almost certain your ADSL experience can't have been worse, I'm surprised chorus allowed VDSL.

I was surprised by the fact they offered me VDSL2, but I took it thinking it would be an upgrade. It was for a few months, about 2-3 mbit/s faster on download with no change on upload, then it started heavily fluctuating around the 4th month, and I've been stuck with it since. Bit of a shame fibre will never reach me. I'm stuck with what I got for the next 5+ years :( Haven't been playing with the modem at all. In fact it's been continually operating for the past 2 months.

But yeah, we'll let cofffe advise.

what was the timing of the switch? and when did it start feeling not a flash?

I suspect, it will align with when vectoring was activated.

one downside of vectoring, while on paper it helps... it nets a minor reduction on average on longer lines.

Total boarderline connections are the ones that really take the beating. this is due to the fact that the 8b bandplan is not able to be used.

as previously mentioned, one of the key differences with 17a is particularly with US0 it's very much tapered off in gains.

All this is just a theory though.

an alternative theory based on your disconnections and claims of variable speed is, there is a corroded joint causing poor connectivity.

You may find fraser will come onsite and be able to recommend a local wireless provider with direct line of sight (there are a ton around there) that can offer you a good 50/10 plan.. he knows the lay of the land better than I.

Every hill climb i do in the waikato area, i tend to come across a new set of provider's transmitters.

Do you think such an option would fit that kind of usage? Are there unlimited plans out there? What's the point in upgrading my current copper line if that's a better option? So many questions... :)

As for when it started to slow back down to my previous speeds... well that was around the 3rd or 4th week I'd say. That was about 2-3 years ago now. Memory isn't too good on that because I didn't investigate why it slowed down, I just assumed with all the rain & how far away it was that it was normal. Also on the corroded joint.. yeah that's definitely a possibility. Our house is very waterlogged & the ETP (the box) is on the outside below a gutter. The wiring is also extremely old & not very covered from the elements.

I am pretty sure that Lightwire have wireless gear out those ways.

There is also Wanna but i think they are more Raglan based but could be worth a phone call.

A lot of the wireless (note: not 4G) providers have large/no data caps. Depending on your location wireless may be a better option than copper.
