hi everyone

just back from a 3 month meander overseas that was relaxed and lovely... need to set up new bb account out of napier and fear days ahead. past experience with telecom and xnet didnt impress. most use evening and offshore - lots of email etc (not movies / music). until move to nz 3 yrs ago had excellent 10 yrs bb service and still annoyed by nz supply. would any kind soul recommend a decent service for the ignorant masses?

I've found Telstraclear ADSL to be pretty reliable, doesn't slow at peak very much at all but in comparison to Xnet it isn't cheap.

Using Vodafone here and it's been excellent for me for normal usage and speeds at peak times are good.

You might see around here that a few recommend Slingshot and Snap too.

My first recommendation would be Xnet, but if you aren't keen on them, Snap's my second choice (I've never used Slingshot so I can't comment).

I'm quite happily using Xnet fusion here in Napier for my broadband + two voip lines.. but then most of my usage is during the day. I was previously with IHUG/Vodafone and I certainly would not recommend them.

Yeah same, i had peak slowdowns here in ham too before switching. Also not allowing interleaving off = crap for gaming, going from FS/128k to FS/FS no interleaving cut my pings more than in half.

From other's comments, I'd recommend (and would use if I could afford to): TelstraClear or Snap (I avioded since ChCh datacenter = ~30ms higher pings.

From personal experience I'd recommend against: Xnet. (Slow int'l internet, and bad support).

Slingshot is so/so. The support is awful (it doesn't exist), but the service is OK.

I would check out airnet, I was with them until mid year and very happy with speeds and support

I would recomend not going with airnet.
Every so often i find a client who they are over charging on a 3 year old 1gb broadband plan, and havent told them of their newer, better value plans. One client i recently picked up was paying about $50-$150 a month in overuse fees for the last year or so when airnet had released new sets of plans without letting these people know.

Oh also I think you have to have voice with them if you want to be a new broadband customer as of a couple of months ago.

SafeNZ are a good local provider who we use for a couple of our clients.
