Greetings,

I just installed an outdoor DSL splitter next to the phone NIB, made all the necessary connections, installed a new CAT5e line, installed a phone jack (for the router) but still get no dial tone at the new jack. Phone still works. I am wondering if my understanding of how to do the connection is correct.

The splitter I have contains NETWORK, VOICE and DATA connections. Are my assumptions correct below?

1- I connect the NIB to NETWORK in the splitter
2- I connect the phone line to VOICE in the splitter
3- I connect the new CAT5e line to DATA in the splitter
4- I connect the CAT5e to the phone jack

After this though, I guess I still have some questions:

A- Two wires are connected to DATA, yet the new phone jack expects 6 connections. Is this OK?
B- It seems that I could be grabbing the wrong line that I connecting to VOICE (I believe that I could be grabbing the alarm system, which has not worked in quite a while, verification still pending). But in this case, the phone line is connected inside the NIB in a way that I do not understand the layout. I wish I can add a pix of the NIB.

Hi, where are you geographically speaking, my guess US/Canada. Exactly what splitter did you install (ie link to product would be good).

Yes your understanding of which ports go to where is good, but the phone jack you are installing for the DSL connection, is it a BT or a RJ, if BT what type 2wire or 3wire, again these details would be clarified with geographic information.

Lastly it concerns me that you are playing in teh NIB, normally only carrier certified or qualified folk should be in there, might seem just a simple box, but it obviously has confused you and for the saftely of the folk at the exchange you maybe should not be in there, but your local country rules may be different on this count.

picture of inside of NIB would be good, but you need to host the pictures elsewhere, ie own website, flicker or photobucket and link them here.

Ah sorry, yes US. My omission is more attributed to a lack of knowledge in that area. The phone jack is an RJ-45 (there are 6 connectors). The CAT5e wire I'm running into that jack contains 4 sets of wires, thus 1 set is left unconnected.

My understand with the local code here is that there is a customer area of the NIB for this type of setup, where the customer (or the alarm company, etc) can hook up whatever needs to be hooked up. Not sure why, but I could not paste the hone box here. Thus the link, http://www.flickr.com/photos/31170393@N06/

The wire in the middle is the phone line going inside the house. I do not want to mess with this as this is off-limit of to the customer I had talked to a phone technician while he was performing some work in the neighborhood).

The splitter is the Suttle 649A1.

Hi, the two wires from the DSL port of the splitter go to the 2 centre pins of the RG6, the rest remain unconnected, use a single pair of the cat5 cable for this feed, ie the blue/bluewhite pair.

Edit: you will most likely find that the centre pair of a RJ11/12 6wire screw termination socket will be wired as red/green, but the important thing is to connect the DSL line from the splitter to this centre pair of terminals.

Cyril, thank you, that's what it was, I reconnected the line to the center pair of the terminal, and I'm getting a dial tone. My next step is to determine if I gain any speed at all, and if I do, what improvement am I getting. Many thanks for the tip.
