Hi,
I installed a splitter with new jack last month and got around this WE to move modem and make connection. Modem is not responding, though I get a dial tone. I connected a phone to that new jack and called my cell. This works fine.

I reconnected my modem, and I get a blinking light, and 2 solid lights, and no connectivity to the internet. I had to move the modem back to its original location. There, I get 3 solid lights.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Was this a central splitter with a jackpoint just for ADSL? Or a new phone jack with a plug in filter?

it's a DSL splitter for ADSL next to the outside phone box. The DSL terminal from the splitter runs inside the house to a new phone jack I installed. No filter is required in this case (as I understand it). I tried it anyway with and without filter to no avail.

Did you install the splitter or have it installed by somebody?

It sounds very much like it's wired the wrong way around (ie that new jackpoint is off the voice section) and the other jackpoints are off the data section due to the fact the old jackpoint is still working.

the install was done by me (and it shows).

The old jacks still have the filter connected. Phone works well as well as the DSL from the old jack. So I think the "Voice" part is connected correctly.

I just check the connetion from the "DSL" terminal and it is connected to the new jack correctly. I also reverse the connection in the new jack (from #3 to #4 and vice-versa).

I guess I should mention that there was an alarm system in the house that has not worked in ages. The wiring that came out of the phone box was pulled out, though it's still connected to the alarm box. There may be other wirings coming out of the alarm system to the phone line, though I'm not sure about this as there are tons of lines coming out of the box.

Without really knowing how it's connected or knowing you're wiring it's impossible to say the exact cause but it still sounds very much like it's wired incorrectly.

The splitter should be installed after the demarc but before any jackpoints. This means that the old jackpoints should not have ADSL and your modem should not be working on them as they should be voice only. The fact that you still have ADSL on the existing jackpoints indicates they are either running in parallel to the splitter (ie joined into the demarc somewhere before your splitter) or you have the splitter wired incorrectly.

I guess it's back to the drawing board... I now just disconnected completely the alarm from the NID and from the house. And will try again.

You mentioned that the old jack should no longer work if the setup was done correctly. Is this true even if I leave the filter in the old jack?

The modem should not work on the old jack and there is no need for the filter on the old jack if the master splitter is wired correctly - this is the whole point of installing it.

The purpose of a master splitter/filter is that it sits after the demarc point and before all phone jacks or alarms. You run 1 wire (or 1 pair of an existing cable) to a dedicated ADSL jackpoint. Every other jackpoint in the house is wired off the voice part of the splitter and will only function for voice not ADSL.

Huuuurrraaaayyyyy, got it to work. Apparently, one of the DSL line was disconnected at one terminal, caused by a bit too much pull when I closed the cover.

Something is still not wired up correctly thugh if you can get a DSL service off an existing jackpoint. With the master splitter fitted there should only be a single jackpoint wired up for data. In this case it should be the new one that you have fitted. If you have others that are still working with the ADSL modem you're still going to need filters on them, in which case fitting the master splitter was a waste of time it's it's nothing but an expensive filter.

that's what I'll try next WE. I have not tried this since I got the connection to work. I'll reconnect to the old jack with filter on as a curiosity...
