Hi guys, i have some problems with my ADSL2. Currently my speed is under 2k, sometimes its only a few hundrends. i am with Vodafone red network and i havent exceed my date limite yet. I live in Glenfield Bayview. not realy sure how far is the exchange from here tho.

I m using a wireless network but at the moment there is only 1 computer in this network. the modem is belkin N1 wireless modem-router. and adaptor is belkin N1 usb. also i have tried to connect my pc to the modem by a cable yesterday but appeared the same speed. at the mean time i m still waitting for vodafone to come back to me since i had a slow speed log done yesterday.

Ok, now i have some silly questions. please fast your seat belt and we r rdy to go!

1. i have an actived alarm in my house but its not monitored, however it has the function to call my cell if it is activated. so would it do anything to my broadband speed?

2. when my modem connecting to the net, if i pick up my phone i can hear the dialing noise even there is already a filter connected, is this correct?

3. also with filter connected,but SOMETIMES i will still experience disconnection when there is phonecall coming in or out on my landline.

4. this is done at 8AM on 30-10-08.

is this ok or i have bad lines? if the phone lines r too old or damaged, is it going to cost me to fix or change them or is vodafone going to do it for free?

Hi, 47dB line attenuation should do better than 1.5Mb/s and without knowing the cable distance the 47dB may infact be wrong too, 47dB infact should be able to achieve 5Mb/s or more.

All the things you mention indicate a filter issue, either with the alarm (which if it can dial a mobile is wired to the line) or a phone or Skybox or fax that is not filtered. All phone devices must be filtered, the DSL modem is infact the only device that does not require a filter. If you have more than 4devices (including the alarm) then I recommend a central filter is used, infact with a alarm the use of a central filter is pretty much the only way to go.

The exchange is at the intersection of Mayfield, Neal and Glenfield roads.

Im in Bayview also, but on Xnet with a central filter. Im exactly 2km from the exchange (as the cable lies) and my rate is approx 5.5mbps all the time. (after a LOT of hassles with the line)

A friend who is a couple of streets away from me is on the Red Network and gets around an 8mb connection I think. He had all sorts of issues when he 1st got ADSL there, Telecom ended up replacing all the cabling from the road to the house which solved the problem.
I think whoever Telecom got to do the original cabling for Bayview did a cheap job.......

it appears to me the linear distance to the exchange is around 1.5km to 2km...but not sure the wire length...
how much did it cost your friend to get all his cable changed? or they suppose to do it for free? (i hope thats the case!)

and there is no other device connecting than the Phone and Modem sharing 1 filter/spliter, oh and the the alarm. but i had the alarm installed last year, there was no problem with my broadband after that. all the sudden i got heaps problems from this year, before and after switching to red network.

its more likely a periodic problem, sometimes it works just fine, i can hit 400KB/s downloading, but sometimes it just disconnects frequently or even coulnt connect to the net. ( but if i make a call with landline it can hook back to net. ?.?...wired..). basicaly this is what s happening and now i m finally sick of all this crap and i m trying to solve it for god sake.

I dont think my friend got charged as it was Telecoms cabling and wire maintenance fee's had been paid etc.... but he still had to fight for it.

If the problem only appeared all of a sudden, it could be due to a bad connection somewhere (not necessarily your house either) all the way to the exchange....

When I had my issues (http://www.xpd.co.nz/blog/?p=69), it took a tech with a brain to track things back....

Only thing you can really do, is make sure its not your equipment by unplugging everything except the ADSL. Failing that, try a different router.
Then goto your ISP and lay a fault. Fingers crossed you'll get someone who has a clue and will get Telecom onto it
