I will be visiting NZ later this month. We have rented a cottage for 8 days in the Hawkes bay region but there is no Telephone Land line in the cottage and I am trying to find info either from Voadaphone or Telecom NZ on the possibility of Mobile broadband for my laptop.I do not want to use my GSM number as roaming will be too expensive and I am looking for a short term contract for 10 days. ( I just need it for my emails and a bit of surf but no heavy download). Do you have any recommendations as I cannot find the info on Vodafone or Telecom NZ web sites.Thanks in advance

Thanks for the tips and suggestions.I have no vodem or stick but could buy one and buy prepaid cards but then do I need some sort of Internet subscription to a local provider ? do I need to dial a specific number ?

depending on your mobile also you can use it to tether with your modem, the important thing with vodafone is the apn, which is www.vodafone.net.nz i think ... johnr please confirm.

If you buy a vodem (Vodafone, GSM) or a TStick (Telecom, CDMA) you will be using the mobile operators for access. With a vodem you just insert the SIM card, plug it to your PC and install the software. With the TStick you just plug to your PC and install the software.

Vodafone offers a casual rate, $10 per day up to 10MB. After this it will be $1 per MB. Very expensive.

Both operators offer plans for 1GB and you can use it with or without contract. The device will be cheaper of course if you get a contract.

Uh, shouldnt that be $1 for 10mb? Thats enough to at least check email!

Doh. Yes, sorry. $1 a day for up to 10MB, then $1 per MB after that, reset every day.

That would be $1/day not $10. $1 for up to 10MB of data.

It's designed for casual use on your phone rather than for plugging in your laptop... 10MB won't go too far on a laptop but on a mobile it's good for casual use.

It's $2 per day for up to 10mb of data.

Edit - wait, when did it go down to $1 a day? That's a pleasant surprise:)
