Firstly, this is my first post, so hello all. Just thought I'd say I've found a few real gems of knowledge here just by ghosting via google, but now I have a number of questions and I think the wide array of knowledgeable err.. Geeks :D will be able to help me.

I am currently on Xnets Flood/Torrential plan.
My current ADSL Status is:

	Downstream	Upstream
SNR Margin	18.4	16.0	dB
Line Attenuation	6.8	6.0	dB

Data Rate	7616	896	kbps
Latency	INTERLEAVED	INTERLEAVED

According to http://www.telecomwholesale.co.nz/maps my exchange is on ADSL2+.

My first qusetion is can I actually believe http://www.telecomwholesale.co.nz/maps?
Second question, does ADSL 2+ provide better pings then ADSL ?
Third question, can anyone link me to a very good ADSL2+ Modem (if knowledgeable enough one that is compatible with IpCop)

EDIT:Fourth question, can the 'Static IP' telecom gives you on the 40G plan be reset on command? or do they make you wait 30 days or pay money or something?

I believe that only if your are a fusion customer do you get ADSL2+ speeds. I am also on XNet in a Telecom Wholesale ADSL2+ area.

My modem says ADSL2+ modulation but only 6000kbps. Even so, doing a calculation with my line attenuation suggests I should get 20mbps. Its all on Xnet's end

Basically if you want ADSL2+ get fusion :)

I'm talking about telecoms ADSL2+ plans, not enquiring about Xnets ADSL2+ (or rather lack there of) services.

1) I have heard that the maps are accurate. I can clarify that as my area is correct and I am connecting with ADSL2+ modulation

2) ADSL2+ connects faster but doesnt ensure better pings. The only difference you see speed wise is the connection between you and your isp.

3) IPCop is a great product. I use a D-Link 502T in half bridge mode. Basically this gets the ip address of my ISP and passes it to M0n0wall (another firewall like ipcop). This is because AFAIK no firewall software has the implementation of PPPOA (the authentication we use in NZ). Half bridge mode means my modem does all the authentication and the firewall does the rest (NAT etc)

4) The point of a static IP is so that it will always change.. why would you want to change it?

Static = permenant. Dynamic = auto assigned whenever you connect.

Anyone here have anything positive to say about the pings on ADSL2+?

Myself and my partner are gamers so ping is really the biggest thing for us.

Yes. They're only updated once the exchange has been upgraded. It's maintained by Telecom Wholesale (a seperate entity now to Xtra) so having incorrect information on there wouldn't be beneficial to anyone.

The reason your line has those connect rates is most likely (and I'm assuming here as I can't check to make sure) due to the fact your current plan isn't ADSL2+ and won't have had the profile enabled on the port at Telecoms end.

No. ADSL2+ has no significant difference in terms of latency to it's predecessor. The only main factor that contributes toward latency is interleaving (which some providers have the option of having it off) .

As previously mentioned I'm not aware of anyway to have the modem configured other than half-bridged mode. That said, it doesn't really matter which modem you get as all it will do is provide the connection and authentication, IPCop would be doing the rest. Features like SNMP/ability to run custom firmware are all-but insignificant due to that fact.

Unless you live a long distance from the exchange or have a dodgy line your standard ADSL2+ compliant modem will be fine (provided it permits bridging as per above)

As a side note, what you could consider doing also was purchasing a internal PCI ADSL modem (or alternatively a USB ADSL modem) and using this directly on the IPCop box

No, the static IP address is assigned to your modem each time it connects. There is no way to change this quickly, short of emailing and requesting it be done. That said however, it defaults to using a dynamic IP address which can be used with a DynamicDNS provider such as dyndns or no-ip which can be used with auto-update software on the modem/pc/firewall if you're needing a readable hostname.
