hey guys,
im in need of some major help.
Having recently made the move over from the uk, i am very very confused as how to get broadband and what options there are.
I am in dunedin and just need the CHEAPEST broadband. i am lead to believe that you have to have a line rental first and after some searching i am just left confused. who do i go with? i would like a landline but only to recieve calls on and i only need broadband for daily emails etc so 1gb would be fine. but... and excuse me for being dumb, im a blonde after all lol but i want to use it with my laptop, so do i need a modem or does my laptop have one? sorry :-( plus ideally id like wireless so i can use it anywhere in teh house, but for the sake of money id have it wired, but someone please explain what my options are lol just simply too lol who, what and how much. also what about set up cost etc, im moving into somewhere that had a phone line( i think) lol ahhh someone just please help.

First of all for standard broadband you will need a landline phone connected, then you will to buy broadband with who you choose,

To go wireless you will need to buy a Wireless Adsl modem and connect your laptop via that but if your in it to save money your best bet is that most ISP's give away single pc modems when you connect to there broadband

I dont think you can have Naked DSL in Dunedin ( ie ADSL broadband without a phone line rental as well, could be wrong as I am in North Island) anyway, 1st in the house you are in check to see if there are telephone jack points, if there is plug a standard telephone into is and see if you have dial tone, is so dial 1957 to find what the line number is. If not, you can call telecom on any phone via 123 or on a mobile *123 or you can go into a telecom store and get your line connected with a broadband connection, you will need ID and your passport is the best bet. If you are in a flat make sure you have the correct address or previous phone number that was active in the house. Telecom normally charge around $45 to connect a fixed line with a line rental around the same, ( they would be more exact) the broadband connection is free and telecom are giving a free single pc modem or a free wireless modem ( wireless free on 3Gb plans or more) basic plan for Telecom is $30 and they tend to go up in $10 increments is $40 $50 ect.

You can get Naked DSL anywhere where you can get DSL. It's just not a particularly good idea.
You basically get stuck with one ISP, and it's a pain (and not exactly cheap) to switch back to POTS + DSL.

Mobile Broadband is always an option however you wont be able to recieve calls on it.

I dont have a landline and use one of the following, suits me because i dont use it alot either.

Hey, Welcome to NZ :)

Vodafone is offering 3 deals at the moment. Take a look here Link

For $70, you will get a phone line + 1GB Broadband connection + free modem (wired) + free connection. Conract is 12 months long. If you break the contract early, Vodafone will charge you $199 disconnection fee (to cover cost of free connection and free modem they have provided you). The free modem is worth $50 and Vodafone also sells a wireless modem for $150. They will credit you $50 for the wireless modem, so you only have to pay up extra $100 and you will be able to roam wirelessly in your house if you wish to.

Do whatever you want to do man.

and thank u so much for all the comments. i am so much clearer on what to do now, and bill that last comment was spot on. that deal sounds excellent, so fingers crossed it all works out :-) no doubt i will be back asking for more help when i attempt to get everything setup hahaha thanks again guys.x
