Being totally stuck for choice as to who I should choose for my provider, I was thinking maybe Orcon because they sound pretty reliable, and I would probably only use 2GB or so a month, and they don't have a contract as such.

The only thing is I need to sign up for a landline too, and want to get a cheap combo deal, but not cheap as in my broadband will crap out all the time. Hmm.

Can anyone offer any insights/advice? :) much appreciated!

I switched to Orcon just before Xmas and have been happy with them so far. I'm on their Silver+ plan which is 5gb data and phoneline with voicemail, caller id etc for $79.95 . I'm getting 8.5mbps down and approx 1mbps up (2km from Orcon enabled exchange)
Another perk going with Orcon is the nice freebies

Year long 2 for 1 movie pass, $10 discount on first invoice (whch Id better hurry up and pay) and a $20 voucher for Chow dining.

Broadband dropping out is rarely the ISP's fault, more a line/exchange issue.

I've been very happy with Vodafone. We're on their combo landline and internet package (20 gig).

Speeds are good for a semi-rural area (around about 4 mbps), reliability has been great and the price suts us (about $90 per month).

its a shame i don't live in auckland otherwise the orcon + options would have been awesome. Stupid dunedin! lol never mind. Thanx! will look into both options :)

forgive me for saying this but if your only planning on using around 2GB a month you'd be better of with a telecom landline and KOL unlimited dial up for 9.95 or is there a reason you want to send email any faster than that

Yea I did think of that but wanted the landline freed up too. We're getting another housemate (maybe two) in the coming months who will probably be doing a bit of downloading/chatting/skype.
