Hi there,

I've just changed to SKY Broadband to get away from Vodafone's crazy pricing. The wifi speeds are great, but I'm not getting anywhere near the same through the LAN cable connected to my main PC. Is this normal?

Speeds via the LAN are around 50-90Mbps - Much lower than what I'd expect.

I have asked Sky for technical help, but don't expect that any time soon so thought I'd ask the real experts (you guys).

Dan

Tried a different LAN cable and are you using the Sky broadband modem or 3rd party?

What speed broadband plan are you on?

I'm on the lightning fast wifi plan, using the Sky supplied router and their cables. I have tried swapping out the cables and had no luck.

How are you testing?

Using various online speed test sites. Also tried uploading to YouTube and a 600MB video was going to take 50mins.

Hi, that is not normal, I get 950/450 or very close to that all day any day.

What router are you using, and pppoe or dhcp on the Wan

Obviously, what device, is it a windows machine or other, can you test via a Linux machine.

Can you test via any other machine via cable for that matter? What sort of speed are you getting over Wi-Fi to your mobile when you're right next to the router. It won't be the full line speed, but it should be faster than that.

Don't have a Linux machine, but it's a Windows 10 PC which was getting full up/down speeds when on Vodafone just a day or so ago.

On mobile wifi I get about 800 down as expected/advertised.

It's the SKY issued router.

Well the fact that you get 800ish via wifi, but sub 100 via cable try changing the cable, tbh, this makes no sense.

In the network settings on your computer, check that your Ethernet port is connecting to the router at 1Gbps.

How is the machine connected, does it have a built in ethernet port, or are you using some sort of adapter?

Try Control Panel > Network and Sharing Centre > click Ethernet (at the top right) > what do you get under Speed ?

I had something similar when I changed routers recently (I made a thread here about it). Great wifi speeds (near 1Gb/s), much slower ethernet speeds (under 100 Mb/s). Changing out the cable fixed it.

As above, check that you are connected at 1 Gbps.

I don't know about the router you have but most routers have an option for "green ethernet" which basically just slow down the connection to 100 Mbps - which is around the speeds you are seeing.

Again, if you see 100 Mbps on your Windows connection properties then it is either the cable or the router settings.

Sky Supply the Kaon router (here)

KAON BROADBAND

This runs max/max without any issues both on wired and wifi6 (if devices support it and there is no interference)

I am guessing this is a ethernet/laptop/network cable issue, or (unlikely) the Ethernet ports are faulty
