Hi There,

I am new to GeekZone, and am not a geek by any means - more a creative type ;)
I'm currently muddeling my way through some technological stuff and would appreciate some help and guidence.

I have just set up a new business and have taken some lovely office space on The Terrace in Wellington, and am in the process of sorting out my broadband.

Both Telstra and Telecom are telling me that as a business, if I want broadband then I have to take a phone line as well.  But as I am already useing VOIP for my business calls I really don't see the point in paying extra to have a phone line that I don't need.

I guess I am wondering if Naked DSL could be an option for my business?

My only considerations are:

1) Upload / download speeds need to be reasonable as I upload video / TV Commercials to the web for client approval.
2)  Cost.  As I'm starting out I need to keep my costs down as much as possible.

Any help / guidence would be much appreciated.

I have been checking out Slingshot Naked DSL as well as Xnet Fusion neither require a Telecom landline connection but do connect using the copper network. Interested to know how others have found these two providers.. :) Slingshot have an a No Charge for Data download or upload from 1:00am to 7:00am.

Does anybody know if there is a noticable difference in speed.

Hi welcome to GZ,

As I understand it (and there others around here with more commercial knowledge who will chime in) with Telecom (and I presume Telstra) that all business broadband connections can only be had as non Naked plans, ie must take a phone line as well.

Naturally you could just take a non business plan, but not all ISPs will allow this, and naturally your SLA may suffer.

Both of those provides should now be able to provide you with VDSL2 plans as well (such as Telstra Biznet Gold) which will give excellent up/download performance, however as I understand it only sold in conjunction with POTs (Phone)

However as you are in the heart of the CBD there are other options, in particular connect4 and PublicLan25 connections via fibre, however you may find the cost a bit of a shock.

Cyril

Edit, checkout the Xtreame networks ADSL options, might be of interest, in particular BisProNZ and BisLite plans.

telecom have a product line call one office/office anywheer which is delivered as naked DSL. and the speeds are CIR (IE buy 2MB get 2MB).

They are still telling people they physically can;t offer internet without a phone account (bit of a contradiction?).

The main consideration is whether you need business grade and residential grade internet and whether its mainly international or national traffic. Business grade will cost you about 10x that of residential and they charge on the national/international split, and even thought he speeds are quoted as slower than ADSl1+ for example its committed rate which is fast.

Anyone will sell you a business plan without the need for a phone line, but obviously the $40 surcharge for a phone line is going to make a residential ADSl plan still a lot cheaper than business grade stuff.

just as a rough idea for you, a business internet plan consisting of 3MB international bandwidth, 10 MB national bandwidth and local peering access will happily house 600-odd users. A 12MB ADSL1 link would house.. at a guess around 20 if they were doing only light surfing.

Flamer.

Interesting prices, are you sure you dont need the phone line because it's not always cheaper - to compare, I know Telecom are doing an offer called OneOffice where you get the landline included, 15GB/month max up/down free wireless modem, and it also includes call minder and call diversion, only $6 more.

Are you sure you're not getting confused with Telecom 'Total home' which comes with a 10Gb BB plan.

OneOffice is a WAN solution delivered over Frame relay, Ethernet or xDSL designed to connect multiple offices together within a MPLS cloud.

@KDN, Unfortunatly I am in a large office building - so they won't allow me to have a residential line ... I did try though!

What companies do the split national bandwith and international bandwith packages?

I quite like the look of Orcon's purple plus, dows anyone have any thoughts on this?

what area are you in?

maxnet, orcon, FX net will be able to re-sell you a fibre connection where you will be able to get a decent choice of internet plans.

I'm in Wellington CBD.

As a new business start up price is really important to me - fibre is something I can aspire to in a few months time once I start getting some sales ;)

I've gone for Orcon on the Purple + - ADSL2+, hopefully they will come and install it this week - as I have the keys to my office but can't officially move in until I have phone / broadband.

Many thanks for all your help and advice, it's really been much appreciated.

Hi Actiongirl,
Welcome to Geekzone.
Sounds like you have settled on Orcon, it is my understanding that they are a good ISP to use.
