Hey guys

over the past few days i have seen a cabinet like structure being buit about 150m from where i live, i suspect it is a roadside cabinet. On the telecom wholesale website, it says that from OCT 1 there is to be a VDSL pilot program going to be running. I live in the Howick area, and on the website it says that it will be in the howick area. Is the cabinet that was newly built, a VDSL cabinet?

The cabinet would be capable of holding VDSL2 capable equipment, yes... although such equipment would also handle G.DMT/ADSL2+ connections as well. Presumably Telecom will be upgrading existing equipment too (whether that's as simple as a firmware upgrade, or hardware replacement, I'm not sure).

If you were offered VDSL2 service as part of a trial or a live service, you would need a VDSL2 capable modem/router to take advantage of the increased speeds (I think it's something like 50/20 Mbps at best, 23/7 on average... probably closer to the former if you're 150m from the cabinet). I presume Telecom will be selling them to its retail customers, but you can buy VDSL2 consumer equipment from some retailers these days, if you're prepared to pay somewhat more than you would for ADSL2+ equipment.

What isn't certain yet is whether Telecom will give people a free upgrade to VDSL2 or whether they will have different wholesale/retail plans. The Commerce Commission appears to be giving them a thumbs down on charging extra for it, so who knows. It's a far more significant step than ADSL to ADSL2+ was, simply due to the dramatically improved upload speed (which significantly broadens what people can use their connection for).
