Ok so I have been with Orcon for a few years now and have been on their ADSL2+ plan in glenfield, north shore for the last year but have had to move house recently.

At my new place I was told that I could not get ADSL2 connection because although the exchange had been upgraded the local cabinet had not been and there was not a due time for that to happen at the moment.

first question is: is there a website that i can check when the local cabinet will be upgraded by Orcon or vodafone like you can do on the telecom website: http://telecomwholesale.co.nz/maps

second question is if it is not going to be done for a long time then it looks like I will be changing providers as I am also not happy about how Orcon handled my move (took 3 weeks not including a week after i first called them because they apparently have no record of me calling them). so is there another company that anyone could recommend that will give me the best speeds for fairly cheap.

I am a uni student and generally use about 50GB a month in download.

Any help from anyone would be great

also incase anyone has a way of finding out if i can get adsl2 at my place my address is 78 carlisle rd, browns bay

Hi, as you would have seen from the telecomwholesale site the Glenfield exchange is ADSL2 but the addition of cabinets wont happen till sometime next year. Currently neither Orcon nor Vodafone are offering LLU connections via cabinets (ie they have no business case to put their gear in roadside cabinets) so your best option is to stay put until those cabinets are in place then move to a Telecom wholesale plan (ie with any ISP including Orcon or Voda but using Telecoms DSLAMS) to get bet performance.

Cheers
Cyril

hi cyril7

thanks for the quick reply. I am now living in brownsbay/torbay area which according to the wholesale site is showing as being set up for adsl2. If it is set up is there any other company that you would recommend over telecom (had some bad experiences with them in the past and if i went with them it would look like i might have to go with a business plan meaning being locked un for 2 years).

i need around 50GB a month as fast speeds as possible at the lowest price :)

If i do go with the business plan from telecom does anyone know if the prices on their website include a phone line or if there is any discount if you get a phone line with them?

Premium performance and lowest price are contradictory desires.

If you want as fast as possible you should look at Telecom, Telstra, Maxnet, Actrix and Inspire... however those ISP's are more expensive than Orcon, Vodafone, Slingshot, Xnet etc.

Are you looking for landline + standard adsl or would naked adsl suit you?

naked would work fine as i use skype for most of my calls anyway and the few calls i do normally make i can make from my cell anyway.

Ok just heard back from maxnet and they said that they are ready to go if i want to change over to them :)

Now i just need someone to answer a few questions about them before i jump ship:

1) how fast are they at getting a connection up and running usally?

2) If I go with them will I be stuck in a 12 month contract or anything? they didnt answer that in the email.

3) does anyone have any ideas on what their copyright policies are? are they like xnet who give you 2 warning then cut you off or are they like Orcon who ignore it completely?
